way to get it done. Time to practice! I'm taking a certain interest in this robot because of its simplicity. Quick question, why arent there any treads on those wheels? you might want to consider that.....

Re: pic: Ramp Drop Test Team 1583

Deployed the level surface 12 inches high is 37 x 76 inches which is more than enough room for two bots with bumpers. Remember the wheelbase of the bots is what counts. That's another way of saying the bot chassis can overhang the ramps. The video was shot without the center ramp sections in place. They're ABS panels that are attached with screws. We're going to a scrimage a week from this weekend where we'll invite everybody to try "driving up". Following the scrimage we may enhance traction on the ramps if needed. Some of the ideas of "how 2" do that are sandblasting the tread area of the diamond plate and cutting shallow cross hatch saw cuts in the ABS. Our idea from the start has been to pick a simple strategy and become really good at it thru design and practice. The simple design has enable us to have an almost finished bot that our drivers are already driving around. A good driver can make a so-so bot look great while a so-so driver can make a great bot look bad. Even though we're in the 100 LB 72 inch tall category we're under weight. Life is GOOD

Re: pic: Ramp Drop Test Team 1583

Very nice looking robot. One question: have you thought about putting side rails on the ramp to prevent robots from being able to drive off your robot accidently?

Re: pic: Ramp Drop Test Team 1583

There are side rails on the second ramp which is the last one you'll drive on. We considered them for the big ramp but nixed the idea. If you can't drive up a 38 inch wide ramp to start with rails are not going to help much. Effective rails would have to be more than 3 inches tall.

Good job executing the design!

Alas, that comment on youtube, "what the heck does it do" will probably be a very very common view from the public. (though you did say you'll have an arm... so you'll escape that some)

Re: pic: Ramp Drop Test Team 1583

Is it dangerous? Does it have something to slow the impact of ramp-to-floor. Other than that Great design

Re: pic: Ramp Drop Test Team 1583

Yes, we have flat aluminum pads on the ramp feet that have 1/2 inch thick dense foam pads attached with zip ties. Works well. In fact this evening we deployed the ramps on carpet for the first time. We snuck into the school library (only big carpeted area we could find) and let them go. We've now dropped them more than they would be dropped at any competition with no problems or anything to change.

Re: pic: Ramp Drop Test Team 1583

Oh wow, one of our members came up with the same design about a week into the building season. I'm just wondering, isn't it a little risky to be a ramp bot only since you have to rely on your alliance to score during the match.

Re: pic: Ramp Drop Test Team 1583

Hi John & Gavriel, First the bot currently weighs a little less than 100 LBS. You can bet that by 'turn in' it will weigh very close to 100 . Yes it is risky to be dependent on your alliance partners to score but we think it's worth it. Playing defense and keeping the opposition from scoring points is as valuable as scoring ponts yourself.
