Our team uses Final Cut Express on our three G4 iMacs. It's by far the most efficient "prosumer" software we've found (for either Windows or Mac).

I would suggest teams who need to do some editing for their animation look around the school, theres a good chance you have at least 1 video course at your school and see if you can use their software/computers. our school has 16 dual 2ghz g5's all with the final cut pro suite just for video editing.

your school probably has some apple computers, I hope . they come with imovie witch will work much better than WMM.

While our team is lucky enough to have 16 Power Mac G5's and Final Cut Pro as a result of the video courses we offer (and as Sam mentioned), iMovie is an excellent resource to fall back on (WMM really doesn't count) for video editing and lets you do most things that anyone really needs.

For Windows, I would recommend buying Adobe Premiere Elements for about $60 after rebate. It does an amazing amount of stuff, and having used virtually every piece of editing software there is, I feel it is second only to the actual Adobe Premiere Pro.

Here is an excellent comparison of many software packages.



As for Open Source/Free alternatives, take a look at Kino, and Cinelerra.

You can look at Cinelerra (for Linux). It's supposed to be pretty strong, but I haven't used it before. There's also some other Linux ones.
Zwei-Stein 4 is no good. Don't touch it.
