Team 604 would like to be there but due to a shortage of budget, we won't be going. Maybe next year.

Darn guys, that really sucks. You have been a lot of fun in the past, and we were all looking forward to seeing you there!

Maybe next time.

Madera will be attending Portland for the first time. We finished 8th in the Archimedes division this year and plan on being really competitive again. Look for the blue hair.

114 is definitely coming back to PNW this year. Check the list again and we're on it. I loved the laid back and friendly atmosphere of the regional last year and I can't wait for another great time up north. Also, lowest team number at the regional, for whatever thats worth

Anyone who is going to Portland Please view this thread

This thread is an effort to get info on all teams before the competition that way we all can get a better idea on what to expect from bots without wasting a day scouting there

Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW

Would anyone be willing to post rankings / strategy data after the regional is over? I'm particulary interested in how the teams that are heading over to SVR in two weeks are doing, but any info would be awesome.

Thanks,
-Guy

Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW

I don't have exhaustive data, but things are going well here in Portland. The field has been working wonderfully all day which is a welcomed change, in and of itself.

At the end of the day, team 948 is seeded first -- they're a nice, elevator-based lifting mechanism. 488 is fourth seed, currently, and we've got a 4 - 1 - 0 record. 1540, a mecanum drive tube scoring machine, is 2nd or 3rd, sharing that space with 2122.

I don't have a sense for how many penalties have been called except to say that my alliances have never been given one. Knowing the rules regarding when you can step up the controls, touch the ringers and such is important.

My biggest gripe is that the match lists SUCK. I make no exaggeration when I say that 488 competes against 492 during every. single. match. Other teams similarly compete against one team every time they're up. There're 54 teams at this event, so there's no reason why things could not have been mixed up a little bit more.

Tomorrow ought to be exciting. Congratulations to Eric Stokely, winner of the Regional Woodie Flowers Award.

Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW

There is another thread in here about the match list issue - apperantly the selection algorithm pitches teams with similar numbers against each other, without much shuffling.

Thanks for the data, and I can't wait to see you (and everyone else) at SVR.

Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW

I think because of the matching algorithm the alliance selections will be a lot more interesting this year. A team can be ranked very high if it played an easy team every single match. A good scouting team will be valuable.

So far the matches have mostly been well played (I'm on drive team so I don't get to watch many matches). I am a little surprised by the number of bots who have a hard time picking up rings. Overall at this point in the game a strong ramp bot is about all that a team needs to win as very few games go over 30 or 60 points from the rack. That might change later with a couple of good scoring bots on the same team in finals.

Penalties have been somewhat nonexistent. Touching controls/throwing rings early has been a big one (and those penalties decided some matches). There was the occasional going into the other teams home zone at the end of the match. Also a few times a ramp would fold out outside of their home zone and exceed 72" by 72". No penalties in any of my matches. Not many penalties for pushing or things like that.

I think the highest scoring match was 128-0 and the highest combined score was 106 to 76 or something like that. The highest score might have changed later in the day.

One of the more interesting things that I have noticed is that all of the top robots are either scoring robots or ramp robots. There is not any really strong robot that has both a ramp and an arm. That really surprised me considering the number of teams with both a ramp and an arm.

I beg to differ. Team 948 (top seed after the first day) is primarily a ring-scoring bot, but also has a ramp. Not the best ramp in the world, but we had bots climb it in a couple of matches.

(The top of the robot is 13" off the ground. We had planned to have a ramp on one side and a "table" on the other side, both drop-down, so we'd be able to hold two robots at 13", but we ended up leaving off the table for weight reasons; instead, we just riveted on a couple of plates to keep robots from rolling off the other side after climbing the ramp. So we can only score 30 bonus points, not 60. We could in theory have a robot climb onto our back and then carry them up another single-robot ramp... at least, our drive team claims that the drive is strong enough for that... but I have a hard time imagining that happening in a real match!)

Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW

I think 488 is going to win this one.. especially if they end up with a decent scorer.
