Actually no, you would certainly want to use a piece of shaft and just thread that. It's tedious, I know, but it gives the strength you want with something holding your gearbox.

Salik, I'm thinking both of the shafts would be allowed to rotate, the gearbox should tension nicely if everything is lined up to begin with.
