There is a difference between a geek and a nerd. It is offensive to some to use the two interchangeably.

Just for clarification, the general sense is that:

Nerd - A person with above average intelligence but severely lacking in social skills.

Geek - A person with average intelligence or above and relatively normal social skills but an unusually focused interest in technology, mathematics, science, or otherwise overlooked interests in the general society.

That means all you pi day guys are geeks.

It is given that I am a geek... The question was whether I was a nerd... According to some on my team, I have social skills, only classifying me as a geek....

It's unfortunate that pi day is almost over.

You also chose the role of programmer in your profile. I've been and/or mentored FIRST programmer(s) for 7 years. They have a much higher nerd percentages than other roles. I could provide some good examples, but I won't.

I believe that the majority of us on here are nerds.

Re: Am I a nerd?

Well, I prefer "nerd"...I am somewhat lacking in social skills and I would like to think I have above average intelligence...

The people around me all accept me for who I am--a nerd. I call myself that; I'm proud of that! I don't see any negative connotation there...

PS. all of us programmers are considered hackers--that's a negative connotation for you!
