Banebot Transmissions in Atlanta

Since the Banebot 56 mm transmission (and other sizes) is not yet available from Banebots, the FIRST community needs to help itself. If your team is not using the 56 mm transmissions from the KOP, or has spares that other teams can use, post here that you can send them, or can bring them to Atlanta for availablility to other teams. We are running out of time. Hopefully, Banebots will have them available at the Championships, but we can't count on that happening.

Team 604 has two unused 56 mm transmissions (non-hardened carrier plates) and one 36 mm transmmission. We will bring all three to Atlanta.

It appears there will be really good response to this thread. I would recommend to all teams that want to bring Banebots with them to Atlanta, that they ask teams that are requesting replacements from them, for the broken transmission in trade. This will ensure that teams get transmissions to repair their damged robot, and not provide spares in CASE OF a breakdown. This is the spirit in which I started this thread.

It's unfortunate that BaneBots hasn't been ably to get these back in stock yet. We've already given away the two we were provided in the kit, so we'd planned on ordered more replacements to bring along to Atlanta.

It seems like teams that are competing for the first time in later events might have another challenge, given that teams are less likely to have spares remaining and there's been no way to order extra parts on their own for more than a month.

Perhaps we could go so far as to compile a list of teams that will have replacement gearboxes in Atlanta and provide that to pit administration? That might save us from a lot of announcements and running around in the pits on Thursday.

We can keep track of all the teams that reply to this post, and bring the list to Atlanta. Alternately, I am sure someone will have wireless Internet, so we can check back on CD to get the latest responses. Keeping the list updated as to who has them available in Atlanta, and who no longer does, will be a problem.

97 has a small number of carrier plates (about 4x56mm and 10x42mm) that could be used as replacements for double-D failures. (No whole transmissions, sorry.) They were cut on a waterjet so the pin holes need to be finish-drilled / the double-D filed, but in a pinch they may come in handy. Just stop by our pit.

Team 1501 will be more than happy to bring all of our Banebot trannies (we didnt use any of them) to Atlanta. We will probably be bringing all but the Cim motors to Atlanta. We used the Cims

Note that the new plates many of us have been using still have problems: the holes are too large for the pins, and the pins are too short. This causes the oins to fall out. We replaced the short pins from the new plate with the long pins from the old plate, but they still came loose (they didn't come completely out, although they may have with more use).

I would advise teams using this transmission to swap pins, and use Loctite 638 to hold the long pins in place (be sure to clean the parts with acetone first)

Banebots have announced that a new transmission will be available for sale very soon, which includes the hardened plate and longer pins, but they don't say whether they have fixed the hole problem.

We are still using the original plates as the drive is only used intermittently. We made up new plates by getting 16 mm pins, redrilling and reaming new holes in between the existing holes in the hardened plates (.001 undersized). The holes were drilled in between the existing holes after the short pins were removed, the longer pins pressed in and loctited in place, and the extra length protruding through the back of the plate ground off. The pins have a lead taper on them, whcih was reduced almost completely by this protrusion. Loctite will NOT take care of the poor mechanical fit caused by a tapered laser cut hole that was only partially reamed to the proper size. We are keeping track of the butterfly effect in the Double D hole in the plate by monitoring our drive system backlash carefully. We will likely install the new, modified hardened plates/pins on Thursday in Atlanta to ensure we do not have problems during the competition. The longer pins may still come undone, and destroy the transmission. there may only be a limited number of replacements available, if at all, at Championships. Teched3, redrilling sounds like a good solution. Thanks also for letting me know that 16mm pins will work. I'll order a bunch for the new plates that arrived today.

How hard was it to drill the extra holes in the hardened plate? Did you need a special drill? Also, how did you measure where the holes needed to be? If you used a CNC machine, how did you align it with the plate?
