Winning Regional Chairman's or EI Entries

I was just curious of what a winning regional entry looks like. I hope to learn so that we can improve accordingly for the years to come. If you have a link to one or a copy of the entry, please post it here. Thanks!

Re: Winning Regional Chairman's or EI Entries

You'll likely have better luck with this after the Championship. I know in the past, there have been teams who upon finding out what other teams have, have done something quick so that they can match a competitor (yes, tacky I know, but it has happened). So bring this back after Atlanta and I'm sure you'll get some more info!

Re: Winning Regional Chairman's or EI Entries

Key points:

-The Essay and Presentation are only one part of the deal, but I'll elaborate:
  • Approach the essay like you would any essay in a language arts class (my recommendation, but as the rules say in the guide, there is no one precise and exact way to win the award, so definitely be creative in the approach of the essay, and only use other teams' stuff as an example or framework).
  • Have a 'thesis' and back it up completely with good solid proof.
  • Presentation should be an abbreviation of the essay
  • Cover all bases, and capture the attention of the judges and the entire regional audience with your story and gifts.
-Your team's overall performance at the particular regional definitely matters:
  • Spirit should be good
  • Robot should be decent and playing well (not necessarily high ranking but considerable in alliance pickings)
  • Your pit should be like a wikipedia entry if anyone just wants to find out what you guys are all about, they should be able to walk up and see what you are (put out some material for them to browse)
  • Your team, ~uniform as far as clothing is concerned, but decently professional as well.
  • Profundity is definitely a plus in your imagery
Again, these are my recommendations... use them at your own risk.

-Joe

Re: Winning Regional Chairman's or EI Entries

I thought I would revive this thread since teams are less busy than in the build season and many are currently working on community things that might be seen in a Chairman's entry.

Again, I'm not really looking for a formula for winning Chairman's or something to gain an edge over everyone else, I'm just curious of what other teams have submitted so that we all can compare and see what level of competition teams are bringing. I was also curious of the diverse formats of presentation. As we can see from some of the many winning entries, they are no where close to being alike most of the time.

Re: Winning Regional Chairman's or EI Entries

After winning the Engineering Inspiration Award at the 2007 FL Reginonal, Team 1523 posted a news story on our website with a link for downloading our Chairman's Award submission. We were totally shocked by the win (really didn't think we stood a chance) and think what helped was the collection of news articles and letters of gratitude that we kept at our pit & shared with the judges stopping by.
Hope this helps and good luck as all teams work to inspire & transform our culture.

After MOE 365's Chairman's win in Atlanta last year, we developed a website which includes our full Chairman's submission, team presentation script for judges, and charts we used during the presentation.

Feel free to take a look!

Re: Winning Regional Chairman's or EI Entries

MOE's 2007 Chairman's Award is posted at the link below. (It obviously worked well!) We also had large posters that the students used when presenting to the judges, highlighting some of our programs and statistics. We found this was easier than a Powerpoint presentation or handouts. In the pit area we had our yearbook and samples of the books from our reading program. Don't forget that the Chairman judges do come around and talk to the students at the pit - be prepared.

the main problem we had in writing the essay and summary was getting it down to the correct number of words. The bullet point format worked well as well as liberal use of abbreviations.

This is what is wrong with the CA! It shouldn't be about trying to do stuff to win the award. It should be just doing what you can and what is right. But that is a discussion for another day.
