Re: Dream Job

Alumni of Buzz 175 (CT), NU-TRONS 125 (Boston-NU), and former QUEEN 1975 mentor (Milton, MA)...

My dream job? I want invent and create tangible robotic applications not yet forseen, figure out the integration, design and build the prototypes necessary to improve upon the concepts and solicity funding, pass the robot off to a real design team and serve as the project lead for a little while, and then move on to the next idea of another tangible robotic applicaton.

Of course working under the assumption that full Aritificial Intelligence will never exist.

Need that PhD first.

Re: Dream Job

I'm from Team 234 from Indy

I don't know exactly what I want to be. I'm interested in all my school subjects, and I love robotics...all I know is that FIRST helps me in so many ways. On our team there is an interviewing process, and that experience will definitely help me in any career path. In addition, the skills that get taught through FIRST like design and critical thinking is beneficial in whether I go in to engineering, science, or even something like history!

Kyle Rice Team MOE 365 alumni.

I am close to my dream job, I want to be a professional Fire Fighter- Paramedic in the Tempe Arizona area.

As of right now I am working to finish my Fire Fighters certifications, Fire Fighter 1 and 2, gotta take the written test I guess actuality doing it at work isn't good enough, and am a EMT working full time for a 911 operations company in a mid sized city. All I need to do is move there and get my licenses as a Paramedic.

I also hope to one day be a teacher for EMS and Fire Fighters because right now I teach CPR/AED/FIRST-AID and also life guarding and other safety classes and I love sharing what I know to others.

Re: Dream Job

dream job 1) Some type of engineer. This would be entirely through the workings of FIRST and Scott Ritchie. Without FIRST, I would not have considered engineering as being something I would be interested in and/or capable of doing. And I owe Mr. Ritchie, since his small, but influential speech at freshman orientation that convinced me that I had to be a part of Project Lead the Way.

dream job 2) architect. I have always liked architecture and there are many concepts applied through FIRST that would help in this field. Teamwork alone is something that is valuable in any career, as well as all of the leadership skills.

Team 1403, Cougar Robotics, Skillman NJ

My Dream Job Would have to be Chief Engineer on a car. My Life Goal is to design and have a car built from the ground up and sold. I'd love to be a chief engineer at any company that'd let me do that (if I had a choice, it'd be Tesla Motors).

Re: Dream Job

I'm with rookie team 1983 in Seattle, Washington. Both FIRST, and my science, math and technology focused high school have helped me realize that I am destined to be an engineer. After being able to design the electrical system on our bot, and then build it and figure out all of the flaws and how to improve it, I am hooked on engineering, as a whole, for life. My goal is to graduate from the United States Naval Academy with a degree in some area of engineering (probably electrical, go figure) and then spend a few years in the Navy as a fighter pilot. Then I plan on becoming a teacher back here in seattle and coming back to Skunkworks as a mentor, and hopefully raise a family and send them all through the FIRST experience. FIRST has opened my eyes to all of the different things that I can do with my life, to new areas of aviation, aerospace, engineering, and just how much fun life can really be!

Re: Dream Job

Team 675, Hailing from Rohnert Park, California. We're the only team in the northern bay area.

Career path: Tossup between automotive technician/mechanic and Engineer (but I am leaning towards going to UC Davis for a Mechanical Engineering Major, the other option would be UTI Phoenix or UTI Sacramento for my ASE and other certifications)

How FIRST is helping:

Auto Tech/Mechanic:
Teaching me to work with my hands, to find and solve mechanical issues, and teaching me to use some pretty cool tools (like our team's precision mill, woot)

Engineer:
Teaching me to think critically, to try and find weak points or flaws that could be fixed, all while trying to keep something within a target weight and also with certain components (kind of like how one of 675's grabbers, the one that I designed, was pneumatically actuated, even though we have no pump or tanks, we ended up using a servo-powered gripper then taking our arm off at SVR) and resrtictions.

Any profession:
Teaching me to be safe, to think about what I'm doing and what I'm doing it with, and teaching me just how much I can achieve in 6 weeks.

Re: Dream Job

Team #234, out of Indianapolis (Cyber Blue)

I'd really like to have some job where I can help out others on a national or global scale. With all the hardship going on in the world, I hope that I can do something to fix some of it. FIRST has helped by giving me some design experience, and it has shown me just some of the possible careers where I can make a difference.

Let's change the world.

Re: Dream Job

This is my tenth year with Team 122 the NASA Knights, in Hampton,Virginia, and I am an engineering technician at NASA Langley, and have been fortunate to work in a rewarding and challenging field since 1985. The earliest origin of my journey to this "Dream Job" began when I was 17, I wanted to make exotic, light weight parts for my motocross bike....that's how it starts...for me it was a machining class...

Please check this announcement from NASA Langley about employment possibilities:

To All Employees at Langley Research Center,

We are excited to announce that a Technologist Co-op/Apprentice Program with Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will start in the Fall of 2007.

On Wednesday, April 11 at 6:00 p.m., TNCC will host an Open House at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center in Hampton, VA. Please stop by and talk with NASA and TNCC personnel about this excellent opportunity.

An overview of the Program will also be offered at the Reid Center which will provide information on the Program and how to apply. Watch for upcoming http://atlarc2.larc.nasa.gov announcements that will provide details on this event.

The Program will provide formal training and on-the-job training in both Mechanical Engineering Technology and Electronics with a specialization in Electrical Engineering Technology. There will be 14 students selected for the Fall semester. The tuition and books required for the TNCC training will be provided by NASA. Those students that complete the 3-year Co-op Program and pass a SpaceTec certification exam will be considered for entry into NASA LaRC's 2-year Apprentice Program.

Program Admission Requirements
-----------------------------------------------
In addition to the TNCC general admission requirements (published in their catalog), applicants for the TNCC/NASA Co-op Program in Electronics & Mechanical Engineering Technology must obtain a high school diploma with at least a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) that includes the successful completion of three units of high school Math (Algebra I & II and Geometry). Applicants with college credits must have earned a 2.5 GPA or higher and meet the mathematics prerequisites.

Co-op Education Requirements
-----------------------------------------------
All students interested in the co-op education program must apply by submitting an application to the Coordinator of Co-op Education at TNCC. Applicants must hold U.S. Citizenship. The final selection will be based on the grade point average of all students applying, information within the application, a physical examination, a security background check, and an interview with the Employment Development Specialist at NASA.
