Shooting at CNN Center - Will it affect Championship?

I don't know if anyone has said heard about it, but it occurred about an hour ago. Full Story Here.

I'm curious as to how this will effect CNN center security next week with thousands of kids in the area, as well as its effect on future events.

I don't think that it will have a huge effect, this was a personal dispute as far as the police know now, not anything that was related to the CNN center, it is the same thing if it would have happened at the 7-11 down the street, we only herd about it because of its location. the only change might be more security guards around the center and probably more security for the employees who work at the CNN center.

Sounds like an isolated incident.
thre might be a little more security than usual but I don't think there will be any more than ususal.
Good thing this didn't happen next week. Imagine the chaos with a thousand kids scrambling for cover ducking gunfire.

While this is tragic for those involved I think most will agree that this unfortunately happens in any large city. It of course is very visible to everyone on CD with it happening where we will all be in 9 days and it is not the type of news that our city needs.

It does appear to be a domestic situation as Kyle mentioned. Our heart goes out to the families involved and believe that this is a very isolated incident. We believe that everyone will feel safe during their stay in Atlanta. I think that those that have come here for Championship's since 2004 will attest to that.

Yes Atlanta in the areas that FIRST students are usually around has been shown to be very safe and well monitored by the Atlanta Police Department This will be my 3rd time in Atlanta with FIRST and MOE's 4th and I have not heard of one problem with security while at the Championship event.
It is very sad for the individuals involved but I believe that this will have little to no effect on the FIRST event in 9 days from now and everyone will have a great and safe experence.

I just think that this gives parents already worried about their child traveling to a large city more to worry about. However, 99% of our teams parents come with them to Atlanta anyways, so if we were going this year, it wouldn't be an issue.

I skipped out in 2005, but I'll raise my hand for that statement anyways.
Atlanta is one of the nicest cities I have traveled to (With FIRST or anytime else), and this does not change my opinion at all.

MY personal thoughts on this..

Q: Concerned?
A: Of course.. Life is crazy in a big city such as Atlanta.

Q: Concerned this will happen again next week?
A: No.

Q: Worried?
A: Not at all. If something happens, it happens. Acting rational and staying cool is your best bet in any crazy situation.

Q: Will this change any of my plans for this upcoming event?
A: Seriously.. how would you prepare or predict something like that? I'll still go have a bite to eat in the CNN center food court, go see friends who are staying at the Omni, and while I'm sure we'll see an increased security presence (more than usual for Atlanta anyways) I'm not going to do anything different than I was expecting to do the day before I heard this incident... Except to be aware of my surroundings at all times which everyone should do anyways when traveling to a large city.

My point is.. to me this is a non-issue.

To the people who may overreact to this situation:
I hope no schools cancel the trips of their schools at the last minute because of this.

I agree with most people here. I do not feel that this is a large issue at all.
However, I do wonder if there will be some added security. I doubt it but it might happen. The dome is hosting things all year round and I havn't heard of many incidents there.
And to those that think it is a crime ridden city, it really isn't. Just as Kyle said, it is the same thing if it would have happened at the 7-11 down the street... man i wish we had 7-11's down here in atlanta.

This is seriously must know information for us tourists who can't bring things like liquids or bottles on an airplane anymore cause of beefed up TSA laws!!!!
