As I recall it 987 actually seeded ninth in Newton and became 8th alliance captain during the selection process. This illustrates an important idea -- strength and seed are not strongly correlated. 987 was a very strong team that seeded outside the top eight. Luck of the draw had a lot to do with that.

987 also did two things very well: (1) they scouted and picked to complement their own strengths, and (2) they practiced -- a lot. I witnessed some that second part as a volunteer overseeing the Galileo/Newton practice field on Thursday and Friday. When 987 learned that they could get extra practice field time by camping out and waiting for no-shows, they made that part of their preparation strategy. Seems like every time I had a no-show for a scheduled practice time and was looking for a team ready to fill the slot, 987 was right there.

Two lessons: practice makes perfect, and knowledge is power. Congratulation to the winners 987, 190, 177.

A side note: many of us in the Newton stands were really impressed by the solidarity this alliance displayed when they elected to go into battle dressed all in 190 shirts. One alliance, working together, awesome to behold.

I believe in intuition and inspiration. Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution. It is, strictly speaking, a real factor in scientific research.
