Re: any guesses on next years game?

i'm guessing balls again.

07- nonball (tube)
06- ball (shooting)
05- nonball (tetra)
04- ball
03- nonball (crates)
02- ball (i think)

that's as far back as my knowledge goes, so, continuing this trend, 08 will be a ball game.

Just my $.02 worth

I'm sorry, but you misssed the earlier threads on this subject. I am not even sure quite where they are now. However, a little analysis of the years I know about shows:

1997: tubes (circle)
1998: large balls (circle)
1999: floppies (circle), octagonal "puck"
2000: balls (circle)
2001: balls (circle), balancing bridge
2002: balls (circle)
2003: bins (square)
2004: balls (circle)
2005: tetras (triangle)
2006: balls (circle)
2007: tubes (circle)

There is not a trend to use the FIRST logo shapes. If anything, there is a trend to alternate balls with other objects (and even that is debateable). Next year will probably be balls (unless FIRST decides to do a water game, which they likely won't.)

I think it's gonna be another circle game, just because circles are such an easy shape to manipulate and do weird things with.

About your comment on the water game - I really don't think FIRST would make that dramatic of a change without VERY fair warning. Making electronics work out of water can be tricky enough depending on your setup, but now you have to make everything waterproof? I don't think it's gonna happen.

that's easy... "predict" something that the GDC likes and then uses so you influence the game...

SO-O-O....

I think it will be a Giant game of Fuzzball with a big Pilates ball getting knocked around.

Or maybe a giant game of pick-up sticks with the different colors counting for different amounts and we'd use sticks that are batons.

Take your pick Game Design Committee... and I do'nt even need credit...

Re: any guesses on next years game?

We all know what the game is going to be. The field is a layer of jell-o, the scoring elements are Krispie Kreames, and all the while red, blue and green lights flash on and off, all underwater.

Re: any guesses on next years game?

I agree with the idea of a ball. It seems to me that it makes the most sense. I think it will not be a ball in the way it has been in the past though. It might be a football (which would add variety to the manipulators) or a medicine ball (I think that the weight would ensure that there is more of durability factor and would create more work to keep the robot strong and light). Either of these would greatly increase the difficulty and unique nature of the game.
Just as kwelch, I would be honored if my ideas were used in the next game.

Re: any guesses on next years game?

They are going to prove us all wrong and have multiple game pieces that are squares, circles, triangles, and balls all at the same time.

So...we take a square bin, place an inverted tetra in it, into which a medicine ball is placed and the entire set is place on a moving platform. Sweet.

Oh and you have to Assemble the tetra from pieces lying on the field!!!!!

What do you think?
