I know the guy who they drafted in the 7th round: Mike Otto. My wife and his aunt are good friends. He grew up on a farm near Kokomo. In high school, he known more for his basketball skills. At Purdue, he set a school record for starting 50 games in a row, starting from his freshman year. He is a smart farmboy.

As a Colts fan, I fear the Titans. They have what seems to be one of the best young teams in the league, along with the 49ers.

Watch Otto. He is a good ol' boy who is agile, strong, and dependable. I hope to see him starting at offensive guard by November.

Re: nfl draft

That is it, I am convinced that the Lions are beginning to tank for next season. I think picking Calvin Johnson was a great move, but trading down and getting Drew Stanton was not a better pick than getting Paul Posluszny, David Harris, Justin Durant, any available corner back, offensive linemen or LaMarr Woodley. I am convinced that Drew Stanton will never get a chance to play, because next year we will draft Brian Brohm or John David Booty, oh wait it is the Lions we will draft a wide receiver. We are blessed to have great hockey, basketball, and baseball teams so that is where the Lions get lucky. They aren't constantly scrutinized for their dumb moves. Sorry for sounding so upset and angry, but with the Lions, each year is an exercise in futility.

Edit: I can't write, I'm only in AP English. In my anger I forgot to include the word not. I am a complete idiot. That makes the rest of my rant make more sense.

Excellent pick for the Bills since they got rid of a few LB's in the off season. He is a top notch all around LB.

Notice how they had 3 consecutive picks in the 6th round, that is pretty sweet. As always the Packers went to bulk up the DL first pick and then a RB in round 2 fill the void of Green gone. And hopefully this TE in the 7th round can catch better then Bubba Franks...

Re: nfl draft

My Bills had a nice draft getting Lynch and Posluszny but they still fell firther behind the Patriots who got even better and are now the Superbowl favorite.
We're gonna get nuked by them twice.
This stinks.

Re: nfl draft

Stanton will be the qb of the future for the lions. i think that we did good by picking him. he has a great bridge qb in kitna to help him get ready for the nfl. as much as i love him, they could have picked poslusznky then him. thats the only bad thing i think they did. but hey, we can always get some guys next draft. they are finaly rebuilding the team, thats a good sign.

Re: nfl draft

Anyone who thinks Ginn would have lasted to the second or third round is just not paying attention. The Dolphins being upset at not drafting Quinn will be tempered by Ginn's first big return or the first time he gets behind the defensive backs. Having coached against Ginn, I have seen just how amazingly fast he is. Even in the NFL there are not many players that fast. And it is not just raw speed, but the ability to see the openings and run through them ("running to daylight" in football terms). Hester's success for the Bears this year pretty much assured that Ginn would go in the first round (if there was any doubt before that). Many teams were not sure that Ginn would ever be a franchise player, but he was considered one of the safest picks in the draft in terms of being able to make an immediate impact.

I have done a couple of stat lessons on the NFL draft, using the work of other statisticians to guide my students. One of the interesting things to me is how mediocre scouting is in the NFL at being able to predict who will be good and who won't. This is not a dig at scouts per se, it is just hard to predict who is going to be a good player at the next level. One of the really interesting things to me is that players who shoot up or down far from where they were "expected" to be picked usually represent an overreaction if you compare their stats to other players at the same position. Particularly true of quarterbacks. The hypothesis of statisticians is that general managers will tend to place too much weight on one good or bad game or a 40 time at the combine (or a test score). Everyone remember how Vince Young's stock dropped last year? All the analysts saying there were serious concerns about his ability to play? Guess that rookie season proved the analysts right, or not.

PS-How could a Michigan fan have such negative feelings about Ginn? Could it be all the highlights?

I want to see how Troy Smith ultimately does, although I hope he gets his chance with a team other than the Ratbirds (or Stealers [sic, intended]). Oh did I say Ratbirds? I *meant* Ravens.

Re: nfl draft

Travis, got to agree with you that I wish Troy Smith well, but bring myself to be happy at the prospect of seeing the R....avens do well. Smith landed in a good spot for himself with an older veteran whose backup is in the last year of his contract. Now I just hope that the addition of Thomas and some other guys being healthy allows the Browns to stop the blind side pass rush once in a while, just as a change of pace.

Re: nfl draft

I think that both of those players will not beas good as people hope. Look how bad they played when the pressure was on them in the championship. Now i know what people will say, well Michigan can win a bowl game if their lives depended on it, well, we are not talking about college football here we are talking about the draft, hahaha. but i think that Ginn would have fell to the dolphins next pick in the second round. I think they should have drafted Quinn, as much as i dont like him for what he did to my Spartans, he is still a darn good QB. I think they passed up on the chance to get the next Phil Rivers or Drew Brees.

I keep hearing "Quinn should have been #1" at work... I called it from the start... I know Quinn isn't great and I know Troy Smith is really actually terrible. In all honesty, I was suprised when Smith actually got drafted.

Re: nfl draft

According to a couple of the general managers who have talked about the draft, there is no way Ginn falls to the Dolphins second round pick. As for Ginn not playing well when the pressure was on? Ginn returned the opening kick for a touchdown and then had one of his idiot teammates dive on his foot, knocking him out of the game. How exactly did he not perform well? He has played in a number of high pressure games and performed very well. Even filling in at QB in a bowl game.

By what stretch of the imagination does one come up with Smith is terrible? Based on one bad game?
