Begone! For this is not for your brains.

In other news, Rolls-Royce shipped one of the two Trent 1000 engines to boeing. This is good. I was worried that the engines would not be ready in time. Engines not being ready has a habit of killing airplanes.

This makes me very angry. I'm sure this will cause downsizing at our local Alcoa, that employs a large part of the Quad Cities workforce...

Well if there is a global shortage of fasteners isn't this a good thing overall?

NO!?! I'll be out of a job... or they'd move me to that gosh-darn tool department.

Heh, in all seriousness, why would it be a good thing?

Ok, I know virtually nothing about this area of trade, but if Alcoa can't keep up with demand and another company builds a new factory of their own: what is wrong with that?

But hey, I'm just a pilot.

It's Alcoa that's building a plant in China, if I understood it correctly. I guess, not such a bad thing since they are hiring back to full capacity, but it'd just be nice to have the Quad Cities back in the top 5 most industrialized cities, like it was back in the middle of the 20th century

Re: Boeing 787

As another update; the 787 is nearly complete. Everything is on the airplane except for the engines, landing gear, and vertical stabilizer. It's still on schedule for going in for paint on the 25th, if not sooner. Everything is looking good for the rollout on 7/8/07. First flight is expected to be around 8/15/07. No official date has been set.

Re: Boeing 787

Meanwhile, Qatar Airways recently had that 17 billion.. think about that again, BILLION dollar order for the A380, along with news of another person wanting to retrofit the A380 for a private personal jet.

Still, no one can argue with the fuel savings of a composite based aircraft =)

Re: Boeing 787

The A380 is too big. Plain and simple. Airbus would have been better off making a direct competitor to the 747 (something in the same size range, but with composites and other new technologies). Even so, things are looking good for aviation right now. Lots of very good new commercial aircraft coming out. Bombardier just launched the CRJ Next-gen. Bombardier is also studying a 90 seat version of it's Q400 (dash 8) series turboprop. The Embraer 170 and 190 series are doing well. Sukhoi is working on their new airliner called the Superjet (and Boeing is helping them). And who can forget the VLJ "gold rush" that's happening. It really is an exciting time in this business.

It's finished: http://bp0.blogger.com/_9PoYPYFFn4Y/...8718x88j9E.jpg

Boeing rolled it across the field to the paint shop under cover of darkness last night.

Re: Boeing 787

It's not designed to be big. Its size is comparable to the 767. Also, this is the 787-8 version, which is the mid sized one. There is a 787-3 planned which is a version aimed at high frequency domestic flights (it is virtually the same as the 787-8,but it has shorter wings and uses winglets), and a 787-9 version, which is stretched and is aimed at longer distance flights carrying more people.
