Re: SAT scores

My mom woke me up at about 5:00 this morning, because she had already checked them:

800 writing - 99th percentile
- 9 on essay
770 reading - 99th percentile
760 math - 98th percentile
----------------------
2330 total - 99th percentile

I'm overjoyed, obviously, but a bit peeved that I did best in my worst subject, and worst in my best.

Re: SAT scores

I didn't the SAT I in June, only SAT IIs.
Math Lvl 2 - 770
Physics - 800

To be honest, I expected a much lower score on Math, because I couldn't remember some of the geometry and a few other topics. Obviously, I'm quite happy with the Physics score, which I attribute mostly to robotics.

I wouldn't go there if I was you. Many of us adults actually use SAT level math on a regular basis and also read and write with a proficiency that far exceeds the expectations of an 11th grade standardized test.

And hopefully your dad will see that 1910 is a good score, even great score, for a freshman or even a senior! And hopefully you will have a GPA to match since the latest is that schools are going to weigh HS performance much heavier than standardized test scores, especially by the time you get to the college application process.

Careful there, Slim. You may not want to go there. I do not want to take anything away from the substantially impressive SAT scores that are being reported here. Those that have scored well should be legitimately proud of themselves. They have done well. But while noting your success, there is no need to denigrate those that have come before you.

This reminds me of a story Grandma Lavery told me...

A very self-important college freshman attending a recent football game took it upon himself to explain to a senior citizen sitting next to him why it was impossible for the older generation to understand his generation.

"You grew up in a different world, actually an almost primitive one," the student said, loud enough for many of those nearby to hear. "The young people of today grew up with television, jet planes, space travel, man walking on the moon, the Internet, and spacecraft visiting Mars. We have nuclear energy, electric and hydrogen cars, computers with light-speed processing, robots performing surgery, and..." pausing to take another drink of beer.

The senior took advantage of the break in the student's litany and said, "You're right, son. We didn't have those things when we were young ....... so we invented them. Now, you arrogant little twerp, what are you doing for the next generation?"

The applause was resounding.

p.s. "harrasing" is spelled "harassing"

I am afraid that this speaks volumes about "SAT level math." There's nothing on it introduced after the 10th grade, and almost nothing from after Algebra 1, unless you count "sohcahtoa." This means that there is not very good resolution near the top of the scale, which always annoyed me. That's not really the purpose of the SAT though, so I guess it all balances out.

Nahh

You just gave Dave the opening he was looking for. An opportunity to tell that little story AND embarass somebody at the same time. Somehow the embarassment part drives the point home a little harder, even if you are just watching.

You were just a target of opprtunity. He does this sort of thing all the time, you'll get used to it ... and if you're a little more careful about what you post you'll even get to enjoy him doing it to other people.

With SAT scores like those as a freshman you should have no trouble staying out of Dave's crosshairs, assuming you pursue and exercise Wisdom as well as Knowledge.

Re: SAT scores

OK, use it as an opportunity to gain some wisdom for that intelligence.

You see, raw intelligence is nearly useless without wisdom, and wisdom cannot be taught like calculus. It is the act of making mistakes, lots of them, and learning from these mistakes - this is the way one acquires wisdom.

I am very impressed by high SAT scores - I am always impressed by those smarter than myself - but experience counts for a lot, unbeknownst to the inexperienced.

Don
