I just saw Ratatouille, and I was mesmerized by this movie. Given the species of the main character and the movie's name, one might expect it to be about rats, but it's not. It's about love. The characters' love of creating fine food, their love for each other (well some of them, anyway) and illustrating it all, Brad Bird and his cartoonists' obvious love of their art. Throughout this visual and emotional feast the animation is seldom cartoonish or extravagant, but rather is used to accentuate the story. It captures the imagination and subtly leads you into the story.

[tiny spoiler ahead] One of my favorite scenes is early in the movie, when Linguini is supposed to dispose of Remi, but lets him free instead. Remi dashes off, but then has a change of heart and cautiously returns. The artists blew me away with how they captured his wary return through the shadows under a bridge by the Seine.

Though Cars has arguably better jokes and way more flash, Ratatouille's depth in both animation and script make it my all-time favorite animated movie.
