Just a thought -
I can see, in the very near future, as technology continues to develop, advance, and combine all the options into very compact packages, that the business/corporate world will have some assumptions and expectations regarding using the products that are available/acessible in getting the job done in the most efficient manner. I can also see this impacting college students interested in internships and jobs because of the assumptions and expectations.

I base this on my experience in the office I work in at a university. We hire undergrads and law students and I stay abreast of their needs/requirements for helping our office run efficiently.

Re: Cell Phones

Cell phones are an important necessity to have in life; well atleast i feel this way. My phone is pretty basic, answering/receiving calls, txt/pix messages, an has a camera, with bluetooth capability. I can also go on the web, an that kind of stuff which i dont use because i know it justs costs more money. When i see people my age getting all these new high tech gadgets they call phones i dont know what to think other thank, "oh its new and "high tech" that they just have to have it." Honestly i do not think they need all these capabilities, they arent managing businesses and what not.
However i do think it is important to have cell phones, i mean work, my family, friends all get a hold of me via my cell phone just because i'm out doing stuff more often than less. Its good communication. On the topic of freaking out if i dont have it, yes i am the person to freak out if i dont have it with me just because that is my way of communication with everyone i know. I personally can say i have not had a phone call on my land line for me (other than banks/college people) from my friends in a very long time. But this is just my opinion, there are many out there.

Re: Cell Phones

I agree that cell phones have their place in our society when used with some restraint.
My wife's friend works at one of the high schools. She says they are constantly confiscating cell phones in class. Some students use the camera option on their cell phone to take pictures of test. They than send the pic out to their friends. Others will text message others for answers to tests. I think the student should be immediately expelled from school for cheating or have their cell phone destroyed right in front of the other students. IMHO this would stop others from cheating.
Or how about the cell phone users who refuse to turn off their cell phones in movie theaters? I like the idea of having a jammer installed in the theaters to jam the cell phones.

In Japan, it's quite common to find cell phone jamming equipment in movie theaters, restaurants, or other public places where it would be considered rude to talk on cell phones. I wish (at least for movie theaters) that the United States would do the same.

And while we're on the topic of cell phone etiquette, I HATE it when people use hands-free cell phones while they walk through public places. Especially when they elevate their voices because of bad reception. I can't stand it when I'm in a store, and someone walks past and is like "Hey, how's it going?" (or anything that could be interpreted as if they're talking to you) into their headset.

I've also seen people in line at stores/fast food joints, talking on their hands-free cell phone while they order food. Either call back the other person in a minute if it's not that important, or if the call is really that important, leave the line and let someone else order.

Re: Cell Phones

I was at an amusement park the other day, and while I was waiting in line for a ride, I looked around and the two kids on either side of me both had cell phones, and they couldn't have been any older than 8 or 9.

As for me, I don't have a cell phone, and the only person in my family who has one is my mom, and it does nothing except make calls (and it doesn't even do that much, seeing as for some reason it is stuck with the headset setting on).

Too many people are rude with the use of there cells.
It is just another tool and they would be rude with the others too.

Re: Cell Phones

I think that cell phones are great for contacting each other, I just can't see spending up to $600 on a cell phone.... I mean seriously, I do not know one person at my school that sends "e-mails to clients" like the blackberry advertises, or "checks the stock ticker" like the iPhone advertises, as for them, I think they are ridiculous.

Re: Cell Phones

My first cell phone is coming tomorrow and I am pretty excited because it would be really nice to have a place with all my phone numbers and contacts. Also it is great having something in case you need a ride or are alone with no phones to call people with. I am in a lot of activities that dont have a definite end time so I am always borrowing people's phones to make calls for rides. I ordered one of the free phones because I do not need a uber fancy phone. It does really bug me when I see kids with blackberries with all they use it for is texting and calling people. Its outrageous. I think parents shouldnt get kids a phone that costs over 50 dollars because they dont need it mostly.
