Re: New iPods out

I was gonna buy my girlfriend a pink nano for our 6 month, now they have stupid beige web 2.0esque colors.

I mean I could buy one on like eBay, but then I can't get the engraving. Anybody know if Apple will do it after you buy it?

Still more space than my mini. I'm probably going to be all over this like white on rice. Looks like a lot of fun, and I don't really have much music, but my mini is full as of last week. And it looks like crap. I think it's time to update.

The question, of course, then becomes "How much space do I actually need on this thing?"

I've got a 30GB 5G iPod, and it still (barely) holds my entire music collection, plus photos and videos. However, any particular scrutiny of what I actually listen to would yield that I generally find myself listening to maybe three or four albums over the course of a week. Perhaps a little more if I'm roadtripping, perhaps a little less if I'm perpetually in front of my MacBook (which generally means I'm not using my iPod). I was looking at an 8GB nano before, particularly for the battery life and lack of hard drive (the latter of which did in my much-loved 20GB 4G); I imagine I can most definitely survive on sixteen gigs (which, mind you, is a little more than half of my music, photos, and movies; I bet I can pare it down a bit more if I wanted to).

Throw in YouTube videos and Safari, and I'm there with bells white earbuds on.

Re: New iPods out

I like the new iPhone, but what I don't like is how Apple is changing there whole "clean cut" look at technology and trying to blend in with everyone else. Sure, the products that they are coming out with are sweet, and I think that they will sell, but besides that, I think that Apple is changing its transcendentalist founded ways and slowly conforming to everyone else.... Last year, if I were to buy a Mac everyone would know it was a Mac (not that I would buy a Mac, I NEED CAD, and don't want to dual boot), but now, a Mac has nothing special, just another computer. The new iPod nano, just looks like something that creative labs came out with two years ago! The new iPod nano's do not impress me whatsoever. Apple used to be a company that you could go to, where you could get a device to stand out in the world, now they are trying to blend in. I just don't get it..... You may disagree with my thoughts, but I really think that Apple is slowly going to be just another HP, and it will just be another 80's incident all over again, They were taking for granite that they were the best, but now, they are just making products that they hope everyone will like, not based upon what they already like. I would tell them to stick to what everyone bought in the first place, and keep the clean design. (P.S. The only need for a 160gig iPod is if you are a professional DJ, or a serious music addict. I have 12 days of music, and only fill 20 of my 30 gig.)

I was about to disagree with this statement, as I consider myself a "serious music addict", until I ran through some numbers.

I have ~100 CD's.
Each has ~15 tracks.
(1500 total songs)
Each track is ~3 minutes long.
(~4,500 total minutes (75 hours btw.)

@ 128 kb for music, a minute is about a MB.

4500 MB = 4.39 GB for ~100 CD's worth of music!

Now, 128kb bitrate quality is just my preference, but at this rate my 30 GB Zune can hold plenty more than I need.
Makes sense I guess, unless I buy some converters, and throw on some DVDs or other videos.

For a real world example, 2,007 songs (random number I know, but that's what it is) only take up about 3-3.5 GB on my player now. Not a bad deal. I have some 30 second songs, and some 12 minute long ones.
But still not so bad.

See what I mean...... Do you really need the other 155 gigs?

You could always use it for other things--I once entertained the notion of a 160 GB iPod Classic acting as my backup hard drive on top of being my music player.

Exactly. Also, I don't know how large DVD's would be when formatted and compressed for use on an iPod or in my case a Zune. Never tried it yet.

Also, don't limit yourself on music or videos only for the iPod. You have it usable as a hard drive as Billfred stated. Why not use it as that. There are a lot of documents you need as the Robot season goes by. Why not put them all on the iPod, as well as all your Team pictures to share with potential sponsors if the need arises.

Bottom line is the largest iPod today is 160GB. In a few years, you will be complaining that 160GB is not large enough, and Apple will bump up to a larger capacity just in time. Apparently at this time (with most users it seems) they have raised the bar as far as capacity before the common user needs it.

A lot of people do that, actually, even with the ones less than 160GB. They use maybe 8GB for music, and the rest as a backup hard drive.

I use it as a portable hard drive. It works well especially when backing up programs or holding ISO files for future use or whatever it may be, and I only have a 30.
