Virginia teams! Concert band festival conflict?

Hey Virginia teams, it looks like one of the Concert Festival weekends around the state interferes with VCU. Could be a problem later on, ya know? I know we're already working some stuff out to get at least the drive team to VCU without interfering too much and still be able to practice Thursday.

Re: Virginia teams! Concert band festival conflict?

This happens pretty much every year, where many of the district festivals fall on regional weekends (either VCU or Chesapeake), limiting the participants from certain teams who are able to attend or forcing them to pick between their activities. Heck, it even happened last year in 116's district with VCU, but we were able to work around it.

Re: Virginia teams! Concert band festival conflict?

This has happened many times with 118. MANY [that is an understatement] of our students [past and present] are/or have come from band or orchestra [most from the former] and so usually the students from the top bands choose between Atlanta or Band... Many choose Atlanta but some go to the competition then fly to Atlanta and some have even skipped Atlanta all together. ... Apparently this has always been a problem and that could explain why my directors got mad at me for trying to recruit members from the band... But that didn't stop me ...

Re: Virginia teams! Concert band festival conflict?

Our high school's district festival always conflicted with something. I had the fortune of an extremely flexible band director, who accepted my absence as I gave him lots of forewarning. If you anticipate this problem, let your kids in band know that they should talk to their director stat, to avoid issues later, in particular with grades as many bands (at least in this area) have performance as part of the grading scale...

Re: Virginia teams! Concert band festival conflict?

We already warned our band director, but from our school, we'll lose our first chair oboe, first chair bassoon, and sax/piano.

From the other school though, we'll lose a clarinet player, a first chair bassoon, first chair flute, another flute, a percussionist, a tuba, and probably some more that I missed.

It is quite the crisis. Band and robotics must go hand-in-hand.
