How random is random????

Greetings All,

I am posting this after a weary day of fixing and improving "Tippy" after a grueling KSC regional. I can't remember all of the elimination rounds and I'm sure someone from our team will post the results. I can tell you that The Bomb Squad lost in the finals the and that the other Baxter team, team 15,(who was picked from the field) was on the winning end. Bomb Squad's only losses in the elimination rounds came in the finals.

I would like to find out other's experience with the randomness of team selection for the seeding rounds. At KSC we had 12 seeding rounds. We were blue for all but 1 of them. We seemed to be with the same set of teams in all of the rounds, usually seeing the same team three times. Twice against them and once with them as our alliance member. By the end of the day we could figure out who our partner would be based on if we were teamed with them earlier. Unfortunately for us, it seemed the stronger teams were running in a different circle. Only twice did we get seeded with a team that was in the top 12. When we were, we were teamed with the #1 seed facing the #2 and #12 seed (if I remember correctly). I know it should even out, but since we were with the same teams, 4 or 5 out of our 12 matches we were by ourselves facing two robots. Of course our competition was not as strong as the "red" circle either, but since your seeded by your points, you want to score alot, win or lose.

I'm positive that it was all chance that things worked out that most of the stronger teams were in the "red" circle. But I wanted to see if others are seeing a pattern in the seeding rounds. I mean how could we be blue 11 out of 12 times if it is totally random?

Please don't take this as sour grapes, because it's not. I think this is the best format that FIRST has ever had. You can really see the rookie teams learn from the veterans when they are teamed together. I certainly hope FIRST continues with a similar format. I'm just trying to find out if others are seeing a pattern and if its something we should look for in Detroit.

May you own the puck and your floppies be high,
Scott
