Re: please post hints in how to help improve first bot chassis and which ones they r

By your team number, i'm guessing you're a rookie. Welcome to FIRST! We just finished our first year so I know where you are coming from. I will give you some advice i received from a veteran team: As a first year team, use the stock frame and drive train given to you in the KOP. It's not very sexy, but insures you have a moving robot come regionals. It also allows you to spend more time working on your game mechanism. take a look at the drive train we built during our rookie year. It was very reliable. We did some upgrading during the summer. If i can get some picture of it i'll post them for ya

You may wish to read the following threads:
http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=50291
http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=41757
And these whitepapers:
http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/papers/1705
http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/papers/1443
http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/papers/2037
I can't seem to find them now, but somewhere on the FIRST site there should be an archive of the 2007 FIRST Robotics Conference that has some powerpoints that may be of use.

I believe this is the site you are referring to.
http://first.wpi.edu/

Another useful site is...
http://www.firstroboticscanada.org/site/node/95

And that should accomplish a substancial information overload...

No, wait, I have more! (Chassis and drive systems are my favorite topics)
White papers:
Had to go to the WayBack machine to find the URL for these two, for some reason IFI has removed the links to them from their site:
http://www.ifirobotics.com/docs/Chas...%20Process.pdf
http://www.ifirobotics.com/docs/Driv...provements.pdf

More whitepapers from CD-Media:
http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/papers/1469
http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/papers/1405
http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/papers/1592

And, finally some pictures; since pictures are worth a thousand words, some examples of drivetrains:
Mecanum
Omniwheel-based holonomic
Tank Treads
Swerve Drive
Another (quite different) swerve
4WD

And, lastly my favorite drive system type:
6wd

Well, I said lastly above. I lied. Here are my last links, this time for real. In my opinion, the best bang-for-the-buck upgrade you can make to the kit chassis/drivetrain:
2 more of these,
2 of these,
and add these to taste.

Once you read through all of the stuff linked to in this thread, you'll understand why I recommend these modifications.

I totally agree. 6 wheel drive is the best return for your money and time investment. It makes a very reliable and competitive drive. We used the KOP Transmission because they were free and accessible. Our gears (KOP) were given to us by some of the local FRC teams in our area. We have a great group of teams in the Richmond area.

Here are some drive configurations that may help. Remember the limits of your team when designing a robot. http://team1322.org/tech_tips.htm

If you need some team help just ask, we all will help.
