PERFECT WORLD

I have been reading all the comments on the alliance selection process. As I read each one, I find myself agreeing with that person's position. I even agree somewhat with my son Brian's position (rare occurrence). I then read Raul's early-morning comments and I totally agree with him. While FIRST is busy making a BETTER WORLD we are attempting to create a PERFECT WORLD. No matter what FIRST decides, we're going to Florida and have fun.

After much thought, I think my preference would be to make the alliance selection an automatic thing. The No. 1 seed would be paired with the No. 17 and No. 33 seed, the No. 2 seed would be paired with the No. 18 and No. 34 seed and so on. The only option would be for a team to withdraw for mechanical or personal reasons, and then the short alliance would pick from the remaining field. This process would eliminate pre-alliances, backroom deals, and rejections, while saving precious time in Florida. The alliances could meet during the entire lunch period and map out strategy.

Under the present selection system, even with no rejections, the 16th seed will have to have a minimum of 32 ranked teams on his selection list. The first 30 minutes of his lunch hour will be busy indeed! Luck of pairings has always played a role in the competition. Will the best team win? Who knows, but in looking back over the last six years of competition the winner has always been a very good machine.

Make the pairings automatic. Play with the hand your dealt. Use the time to run matches. AND HAVE FUN IN THIS IMPERFECT WORLD!

Bill Beatty
