PTC, Autodesk, Solidworks...

Now that PTC, Autodesk, and Solidworks have clearly shown that they are interested in FIRST robotics, what do you think will be the future of these collaborations. Will there be more room for more presentations [like the Phil and Ted Show]? Will we see CAD software becoming more cross compatible* [not due to FIRST but in general], and how bout some electronics programs too [like OrCAD, Multisim, Ultraboard, etc.] coming out for teams to use now that they have all the resources for mechanical design?

*meaning you can use more than STEP files to talk between Pro/E and ADI, as well as being able to retain part characteristics when switching into these file types.

I hope that CAD does become more cross compatible. Solidworks is used by our sponsors but autodesk is more common in first (i think?). it would be nice to be able to switch programs but keep files and stuff. Our team has not yet used either of these programs but will probably start with autodesk.

I would like it if .step assemblies carried constraints over. If they standardized that, It would make cross platform work soooooooo much easier.

I don't think we will see better cross platform compatibility any time soon. Making your program read different file types costs money because writing programs requires developers, and they like to be paid (I think they're greedy). Why would a company spend money so you are able to use other companies' software more easily. These companies, while benevolent in providing software to things like FIRST, exist to make money. There is no point in starting a company that isn't designed to make a profit. I'm sure some people in the companies want to make better compatibility, but the CFOs and accountants say no. That being said, i would love to see step files with constraints.
