I don't think we will see better cross platform compatibility any time soon. Making your program read different file types costs money because writing programs requires developers, and they like to be paid (I think they're greedy). Why would a company spend money so you are able to use other companies' software more easily. These companies, while benevolent in providing software to things like FIRST, exist to make money. There is no point in starting a company that isn't designed to make a profit. I'm sure some people in the companies want to make better compatibility, but the CFOs and accountants say no. That being said, i would love to see step files with constraints.
