Help

Hi! I'm Michael and i represent Mays High School of Atlanta,GA.
We just started up a robotics team this year I was wondering if anyone could send me the basic rules of robotics and inform me of what an omni wheel is.

Easiest first: an omni wheel is a wheel wth small rollers arranged around the outside, as pictured here.

Basic rules of robotics is harder. What exactly do you mean by basic? If you mean game rules, sorry, nobody knows those yet for FRC, except the designers. (FTC and FLL are already playing their games.) However, you can find some sections of the manual here.

Re: Help

All right, the first way to start would be to check the main FIRST website, http://www.usfirst.org/robotics

The team resources tab on the left has a bunch of good information for startup.

Last year's robot manuals are located here
They have useful information on the trends of robot rules from the past. The manuals can be downloaded right off the website.

To answer the other question, omniwheels are the COOLEST THING EVER!!!
They can be used to roll straight forward, and to allow the robot to slide while turning.

Here is a picture

I think you mean without turning? Oh, wait--there are two different uses (one end of a 4-or 6-wheel drive to allow easier turning OR one on each of the four side of a robot to allow for moving in any direction without turning).

Re: Help

Yeah sorry, I was only thinking of the one side usage.
But if you can pull it off, drive systems running four omniwheels can do some pretty crazy movement in any direction, and still rotate.

Apparently there are terrible side-effects to opening one's imagination! j/k

Yes, as previously stated, there are no rules available for this season's game until January 5th, but the basics are on the official FIRST website. There are also numerous amounts of resources on ChiefDelphi. For instance, the List of Resources For Rookies is a nice place to fill up on wholesome informational goodness. I'm way too tired to look for more links on this slow 26.4 connection, but this is an awesome community full of very helpful people.

Re: Help

Michael,

It is good to see you on ChiefDelphi. Feel free to ask questions whenever you need. This ChiefDelphi thing has a lot of people with a lot of knowledge.

My team is in north Atlanta. I think we should get our teams together for an afternoon and your team can view and drive our robot from last year. It has omniwheels and overall will give you a good look at how one of these things work. I will contact Mensah or he can contact me.

Ed
