Mid-West Open?

Posted by Greg Mills, Engineer on team #16, Baxter Bomb Squad, from Mountain Home and Baxter Healthcare.

I have been asked by a few teams if we were going to host a summer open this year. What is the interest for a summer tournament? How many teams would take part in a tournament located somewhere in the midwest? We are located in the middle between Texas and Chicago but it is a long trip for everyone. Let me know what the interest level is and we will look into it.

Greg

Greg,
I'm not sure about the rest of my team, but I would love to go down to Arkansas for a competition. I'm pretty sure the rest of my team would too. Especially since I made friends with a lot of memebers on your team, it would be great to see them again! so if not my whole team, count me in!

I don't know if all my teammates are game, but some of the more hardcore members of our team have been kicking around the idear of hosting a 'friendly' invitational with 30 or 40 of our closest FIRST friends some time this summer.

The Pontiac Central gym is hardly used in the summer. Also, Delphi HQ bought at complete field from FIRST for the SAE Family Night. It would be a crime not to put the gym and FIRST game field to more use somehow :-)

I have to talk to the great folks at Plymouth who run the Rumble and the great 'West Coast' teams (of Michigan that is) who host the Western Michigan Invitational every year in order discuss the ins and outs of hosting a FIRST competition.

Hey, how much work can it be???? :-)

Joe J.

P.S. Does anyone have any contacts at the Henry Ford Museum? Perhaps there is some way we could tie in with them somehow. I think it would be a great place to have a Post-FIRST after glow. Any takers?

I'm sure we would come if invited. Of course you would have to schedule around the two CART races

In addition to Henry Ford Museum, how about the Detroit Science Center?
The program director from the Science Center was at the Ypsilanti regional
and wanted to see how she could fit a FIRST exhibit into the Science Center.

My university helped them with a robotis display a few years ago...I would
like to help them out again.

Just a thought. I was planning to give it more consideration after nationals

Dan,

Or maybe University of Detroit Mercy would host a post FIRST competition?

If only we could find a professor from there who knows about FIRST and could pull some strings for us.

Professor Maggio, do you know anybody who might fit that definition ;-) ?

Quite a bit, as I've found out...I'm one of the team members working on coordinating this year's West Michigan Invitational, and let me tell you, it's no small task...If you decide to tackle it, feel free to drop me a line...I'd be glad to give you some help.
