Depends. Remember robots are worth over 4K [including KoP items and possible off season mods]. Victors @ $120, Aluminum @ $_.__ per __, gears, sprockets, #25/#35 chain, and the list goes on and on. To some teams, they just can't afford spending that much over and over for stuff they "have" in their own backyard.

They also take up a ton of space. The NERDS only have two FRC bots and there is still not enough room.

They are also great for prototyping.

I saw 330's shop midseason this year and they were using several (iirc) older bots as prototypes for this season.

A lot easier to bolt on a manipulator prototype to an already working arm on an already driving base than to start from scratch.

Like mentioned above, we knew there wouldn't be enough money to buy spare parts. I just learned yesterday that our funds might be getting "dipped" into from another source. The administration handles our account, but we lost a good deal of money during the off-season. We havn't done anything since Buckeye 2007.

You didn't see 2002 or 2003 in there... Those are at the other facility. 2002 will likely never be scavenged. Something about too hard to get into it. 2001 was brought in to repair 2004.

2004 became the prototype for 2005. At a preseason scrimmage, this drew comments about "looks familiar" and "Are you sure that's legal?" (To which the answer was, "Well, it was legal last year!" 2006 is a software testbed, particularly for the camera. 2004 was used as a prototype for 2007 until the practice bot was ready. 2005 is currently waiting to get its controller back from 2007 practice.

At last count, we have locations for 9 of our robots. One is at JPL somewhere (sponsor) and the other 8 are in various stages of disrepair/scavenging/competition readiness in one of our build locations. I also know where some parts for two others are, but no frame for those.

Re: pic: Taking apart the 2006 bot

As long as you have a short memorial service, it's O.K.

Our robots have proven to be worth more functional than disassembled: In order to get or keep sponsors, we do demonstrations. Example: to give themselves a high-tech image, a new ford dealership around our area had us playing half-court AimHigh in their showroom... I wish someone took videos! Our tetra robot goes out for a lot of shows too, occasionally even the 2007rackbot.

You might look into seeing if some of your sponsors would enjoy a demo.

Re: pic: Taking apart the 2006 bot

Right now we're working out some knots in our whole sponsorship/funds situation, but I don't doubt that they're invaluable for that purpose. We still have 2002-2005 intact, sitting in crates, scattered, in the metal shop's closet upstairs, so they're not really intact. Technically, we could put some of them together and just create some generic bots to show off.

Peh. Who has time for that? Usually it's not so much a disassembling of the old robot as it is a cannibalization.

"I need a boogle-hickey! NOW!"

"I think there's one on the robot from 2 years ago."

Followed by sounds of sawing (because all those nuts and bolts have seized).
