You're going to have a tough time making something more compact than team 222's ball shifter design (linked to earlier). You could definitely get one to around 6" long, including motors, if you moved the motors around a bit.

Pfff. 6 inches is HUGE! I've got a 5 inch by 4 inch tranny, that's around 2.5 inches thick total. Powered by a single 3 inch CIM, ball lock, all the SWAG that's needed by a good tranny. If the big motor is in the kit, you might see it in a 114 bot....

EDIT: yeah, 6 inches is pretty small... And very nice if a designed can pull it off. The 5 incher took me a month of design tweaks to hone it down to that size.
