NASA

Posted on 5/21/99 5:41 PM MST Did anyone happen to notice the 'signing of some papers' by Dean and a NASA guy? Was that a partnership agreement with NASA? If so, think of the impact that will have with this program. Looks like there will be a lot of new NASA teams and NASA regionals. Will it be called NASA-FIRST? Tom Wible |

NASA-FIRST?? I don't think so. Of course that's just my opinion. It would be kinda cool though if it would benefit the program. Tim Murray team 126 gael force |

I think much of the work and the things we are taught to do in FIRST mirror exactly what NASA engineers face in everyday jobs (moreso sometimes than engineers from different companies).. I remember an article written in our local paper once.. the then editor was writing in a somewhat response to snickers, mumbles, and complaints about the vast amount of coverage that was given to our team (we're a football town).. and at the time, the big story in national news what the running of the Mars Rover in space. In a nice analogy, she pointed out how the process of building that Rover ran, in a set deadline with only certain given materials, NASA had to build a robot to perform a certain task consistently and effectively, and it was successful. She also pointed out that if people wanted to see the live version of that process, they could head on over to Nypro and see that their own high school students were doing the exact same thing in a less long-winded nutshell, having someone like NASA be big time into FIRST is a good thing if you look at it. It may create more competition, and as some people think, an unfair advantage at the awards ceremony.. but personally, i feel, overall, it is only for the best. FIRST and NASA are mirrors of each other. Hey, everyone knows the story of Apollo 13- those engineers who has to make a round tube fit into a square hole (maybe the other way around on those shapes).. it's kinda like the stuff we do.. maybe that in in itself could be the challenge for next year...? |

The contract said that NASA would sponsor 60 teams (at least $4K) and that it would host 4 regionals next year. Add that up. $4000 x 60 teams = $240,000. When you add the cost of four regionals to that you get something VERY big. So... Way to go NASA! I know I'm gonna be hittin' them up for some dough for my new Cal team... -Daniel |
