Students Interested in Inventor Designing?

I'll separate this question into two parts, and then explain...

1. STUDENTS: If you are a student interested in CAD/Inventor design, and have played around with some designs in preseason, or maybe even over summer, what inspired you to do so? Was it suggested? Your own motivation? Something you saw another team do? Where did you get the knowledge on how to do it?

2. MENTORS: If you have students on your team that design stuff on their own time, in preseason or summer, how did they get inspired? How did you get them interested in it? Where do you think their motivation comes from?

And here is why I ask, we are working on possibly building FIRST into our Project Lead the Way classes at the high school, and this year have worked it into the Senior EDD class. I offered to use team money to fund their build because normally the class gets $100 per group, and $100 doesnt get you many FIRST parts!! They wanted to test out different drivetrains, but so far havent done or shown the motivation to do much new design work, so I am trying to figure out what might be missing. They are all really good with CAD, our entire robot was in it last year thanks to these guys, but I havent seen anything "new" or learned in their designs yet.

Our mentors have always told us that we can't go to the championship unless we qualify. I love the championship. So I do everything I can to guarantee we qualify.

I also just really like to designing and building stuff - which is why I got into this competition in the first place.
