I have to agree with Joe on this one. We take our robot dozens of places during a year and demonstrate it to a variety of audiences and everyplace we go people are wowed. And this is even without the benefit of the playing field or a robot that picks up floppies (remember TKO? all arm - no basket?).
It's been my experience that folks are not as concerned about the game the robot plays as what it can do (move, lift, grab, etc.) and how it was built. As long as the game requires the robots to do big, noticeable things (as opposed to something like sorting coins in a box), people are going to be impressed and excited about the robots.
The game needs to be exciting enough and understandable enough to make people stop and look. After that, it's how the robots play the game that holds people's attention.
