<R11>Conifguration Question

Hello,
<R11> states Maximum Width, Depth, and Height dimesnions (sorry, I was not able to copy and paste the box). Are you allowed to have your width as 38 and length as 28 as in past years? Will you have to start sideways? Thank you!

It does not matter which way is front and you can start in any position. Correct me if I'm wrong.

You can orient your robot in whichever direction you want within a 28x38" rectangle. Some robots are omnidirectional, and thus do not have a front, back, or sides.

I Think you can Start which ever way you want. As long as all three robots fit in the starting position box. I may be wrong

You're right. You can even use the 60" dimension as your width if you design your robot to flop over at the beginning of the match.

Dimensions are 38"x28"x60" starting size.

The only restrictions are:

<R11> Prior to the beginning of the MATCH, the ROBOT shall be placed in a STARTING CONFIGURATION that fits within the dimensions listed below:

Any restraints (elastic bands, springs, etc.) that are used to restrain the ROBOT in its STARTING CONFIGURATION must remain attached to the ROBOT for the duration of the MATCH.

<G17> ROBOT Starting Size - At the beginning of a MATCH, each ROBOT must not exceed the maximum weight or volume specified in Rule <R11>. The Head Referee may call for an inspector's recertification of the ROBOT size and weight prior to the start of any MATCH. ROBOTS in violation will be prohibited from participating in the MATCH.

<G18> ROBOT Orientation - ROBOTS must start the MATCH with their long (maximum) dimension in a vertical orientation. After the start of the MATCH, ROBOTS may change their orientation such that the long dimension is either vertical or horizontal. Refer to Rule <R08> and Rule <R17> to determine how this affects the use of STANDARD BUMPERS and FLAGS.

The long dimension is the 60"

True, but pay attention to:

<R17> ...The flag holder must be permanently mounted to the ROBOT such that when the ROBOT is in any PLAYING CONFIGURATION and the FLAG is in the flag holder, the FLAG is approximately vertical and the top of the FLAG is 75 inches above the floor.

The definition of PLAYING CONFIGURATION is

... after the MATCH has started, and the ROBOT has deployed mechanisms, moved away from the starting location ...

so you'd need to mount the flag holder perpendicular to the running (flopped) base. I bet that would confuse a few queuers!

I'm guessing that we are going to see robots that come in well under this size envelope this year. I'm rather excited for the prospect to see some really lean, agile bots. If you are half as wide, you can get through spots that would otherwise be a brick wall.
