Anyone Still like DOS?

I was ruminating one night on how you can't beat the classics. I have a copy of the first Quake, and I was wondering: does anybody still like DOS and use it regularly??? I have a C compiler that runs better on my 8-year-old DOS computer than my new one. Any comments on DOS, Miracle C(my general compiler for non-robot programming)? Plus, if you have any tips on programming for newbies, I'd love to hear them! Thanks!

P.S. Please don't roast me if there are other threads like this one--I just joined up.

Re: Anyone Still like DOS?

Yes, DOS is great. I use it for a program called TurboCNC to run my little mill I'm converting to CNC.

Re: Anyone Still like DOS?

MS-DOS was and is still somewhat useful, though it has since pretty much outlived its usefullness. I got a reintroduction to DOS when I was adding content to an old Windows 95/3.1 game by Crack Dot Com called Abuse. Good game. Find it here:http://www.rocket-surgery.net/abuse/downloads.html

PS: Is there any way DOS could be used as a bot code editor?

Re: Anyone Still like DOS?

If you're really hard core you could use edlin to edit your code with DOS...the later Edit program would be a bit better.

I have PC-DOS 1.10 installed on a hard drive on one of my old computers. And you can't do that with it

Re: Anyone Still like DOS?

DOS was the first OS I had any interaction with (other than an Atari Computer which my family sold, GRR...). It was on a real old computer, even for that day (sort of mid 90s...), had almost a green screen and everything (loud machine, loud beeping, etc.)

These days, I have not much use for it, except for system operations (restoring an MBR after trying another random iteration of Linux, and eventually breaking up with it, pinging google to get internet up and running, etc.). A while back though, I had an odd addiction to a game on dosgames.com called Islewar. It was just really fun to play a computer version of RISK for some reason. Alleycat, also an amusingly fun game.

Re: Anyone Still like DOS?

ya DOS is great. im taking the Cisco IT essentials 4.0 course at my high school and we do allot in DOS. my personal favorite Microsoft OS is Windows 98se, its so easy to program it to do stuff that is not available without special drivers in XP. (direct parallel port control for example)

Re: Anyone Still like DOS?

I like it MUCH better than Windows.

DOS is classic!

It also prepares you to use the Linux terminal.

Re: Anyone Still like DOS?

Well I was exposed to Dos through a friend of mine a few years ago, and since then I love it! Every programmer should learn Dos in my opinion, especially beginners (it makes for good practice)!

Re: Anyone Still like DOS?

Sometimes there are jobs which are just so much easier to type than do with a mouse, which is why DOS is great.

Even on my Mac, I find myself using the UNIX Terminal from time to time, especially if I want to start experimenting with [hidden] application preferences.

Yes, i do. And some other files as well if I recall. But, when XP came out I heard a lot of people saying that windows had finally gotten rid of all the old DOS code.

Funny in my opinion. (It's fun to freak them out and say "oh! so I can delete all those old .dll files now?!")

Re: Anyone Still like DOS?

I much prefer the command shell to the Windows GUI for alot of things.

I just started using PowerShell I still haven't mastered it, but you can do some crazy things with it. Anyone who likes the command shell needs powershell.

Y'know, they must teach that at spy school, because every single movie and tv show has them type-type-typing in a whole bunch to get those wonderful graphics on the screen. You'd think they'd teach them to use a mouse?

Re: Anyone Still like DOS?

We use several computers that are running DOS 6.22 exclusively. One carries transmitter remote control and logging and another is a motion control camera where the software controls the movement of a table under the camera. Photos, posters and art work can be placed on the table and moves can be programmed to rotate, and perform two dimensional moves while the camera is controlled for zooms and focus rolls. Another is used for routing signals in an intercom system but really is running a competitor of WIN 3.1 as a shell that is embedded in the program.
