Re: Anyone Still like DOS?

Luckily I skipped over that version of Windows. =whew=

I started assembler programming with Debug.com, and explored the computer memory and boot stuff using it. Debugging .com files was fun; the .exe files not as much, until I realized it wasn't quite what it was made for....

(Y'know, what is the OS those movies use? Neither PC nor Mac.)

You'd be surprised at how many of their operating systems are actually just re-skinned versions of Mac OS X or Windows XP; and generally it seems like it's split pretty evenly between Mac (especially if they're using laptops) and Windows (mostly when they are using desktops).

Re: Anyone Still like DOS?

Call me old school but I use the DOS command prompt within Windows just about everyday for something or other. Growing up on good old Unix and DOS command lines there are many file management operations I can just do faster or easier at a command line than in Windows Explorer, etc.

Have a directory of thousands of data files written and named automatically by date & time? Want to make a text file with a list of just the filenames of type XYZ that were written on day 10? Nothing beats a quick command line command:

C:\somedirectory>dir -b *10.XYZ > Filelist.txt

Have several text files you just want to concatinate into one big text file:

C:\somedirectory>copy file1.txt + file2.txt + file3.txt > Bigfile.txt

Command line operating systems may be old but are still very useful. Learn to use file redirection (>, <, |) and it will help you more than you can imagine.

Actually, there is programming software in which you can make use of the built in speakers in the hard drive. It's called QBASIC, and is a compressed, freeware version of BASIC. The Q stands for Quick.

I believe the CTU agents on 24 (or any of the computers for that matter) used Linux. Saw it on some behind-the-scenes thing.

Re: Anyone Still like DOS?

I don't use DOS, but I have DOSbox (a DOS game emulator) and Tyrian 2000. The game is AWESOME and it has excellent graphics and music.

Re: Anyone Still like DOS?

I may be showing my age, but back then the only game in town was DOS. Anyone need a copy of DOS 2.0? How about Norton Commander, a pre-Windows-3.0 navigation aid?

I still use several machines running DOS 6.22 for some specialized applications (including my home-built CNC PC Board drilling machine) and I can confirm that it just screams on a Pentium...

Don

Re: Anyone Still like DOS?

Heh. A couple of years ago I had an engineer friend (mechanical/HVAC) come to me with some 5-1/4" floppies he had files on that he wanted. I had to use my TIPC (DOS 2.1) to convert them to old style 3.5" floppies, then a second computer (Windows 3.1) to convert the 3.5" floppies to the newer type, then my (current at the time) desktop (Windows 98) to email the files back.
