Wheels don't have hubs

Trying to figure out if we should have hubs to put over the wheel bearings. Seems like they existed in previous years for different wheel types. Also, no bolts for the mounting the sprocket to the wheel? What's up with that.

Thanks for any insight.

Re: Wheels don't have hubs

Don't think you need any sort of hub for the included wheels. The supplied bearings fit well in the built in hub.

Each wheel takes a 10-32 bolt to mount a sprocket. Check your local hardware store.

Re: Wheels don't have hubs

Andy! Thanks just what I wanted to know.

Now, any suggestions on what to use as axles. Surprised there was not a sample axle in the kit, but I guess that's similar to the bolts.

Thanks again!

Re: Wheels don't have hubs

We bought some long half inch bolts (with the threads only on the tip) and some nylock nuts.

Works great.

Re: Wheels don't have hubs

Does anyone know any other wheel vendors besides from IFI, Andymark, and Skyway that would be first legal? That also carry 8" wheels.

Pretty much anywhere that sells wheels... teams have used wheels from Harbor Freight, Go-Peds, mountain board part suppliers, McMaster-Carr, Lowes, and so on. If you had read the cost accounting and part utilization rules, you'd note that you have many options as far as vendors go. (has to be under $400/wheel though... but I can't imagine wheels being that pricey)

Re: Wheels don't have hubs

Thanks for the help! I was wondering, would Skyway 8" wheels be allowed? Since they are technically COTS.. and if they are allowed where can I get those plastic hubs that connect to the wheel and have 6 open holes to mount with.

Re: Wheels don't have hubs

You can also use bicycle wheels, wheel chair wheels, computer chair casters, or heck why not, the spools from eithernet cables. There is literally almost no limit to what wheels you can use and still have a good legal drive train in 2008.

With the exceptions of treads made of metal, sandpaper, hard plastic studs, cleats, adhesives or Velcro.

Re: Wheels don't have hubs

Hi, the 8" Skyway wheels have worked well for us in the past and we have some lying around for prototyping so I'm trying to figure out whether or not it would be legal to use them. Of course we will buy new ones and modify them for the competition bot. Are there any other restrictions that I should pay attention too other than the price limitation of the wheel? Thanks!
