This pretty much said that we had NATO backing us on any decision that we made. According to those wonderful news people.

That's pretty much always been a part of the NATO charter (Article 5 to be specific). However, it specifies an attack on the territory of or the military of a country in North America, Europe, or the North Atlantic (with a few additions such as all of Turkey). The interesting part is that they applied the mutual-defense pact to a terrorist attack. The other interesting part is that Article 4 has
never been applied to a situation before. While this does not guarantee a multilateral response including other NATO countries, it certainly does seem to insinuate it. Of course the real question is, who do we attack?
