Re: 2 Speed Trannies
If you're looking for something lighter and cheaper, how about a nice 3-speed shift on the fly gearbox? Here is Dr. Joe's Nothing but Dewalts white paper for taking a dewalt drill gearbox and making a few minor mods (all details and instructions included) to adapt to the CIMs. SPAM and others have used this for years and it is fabulous - I can't say enough about how sweet this is.

Re: 2 Speed Trannies
You might also want to make sure you really need two speeds for this game, (although it is about 4 months too early to really know for sure)
The students are pretty sure that single speed will do the job, as we are planning a shooter and hopefully won't have to slow down very often. Current plan is to use the kit transmissions with the second stage removed, and about 1:3 sprocket ratio on the chain drive, with 6" wheels. We would be making the kit transmission into something like the AM Stacker, but with room for two CIMS. Should be interesting to see how it works out. Also we could have a couple sets of sprockets and change final drive ratio if needed. We used the DeWalts our rookie year, and had problems with the gear that goes on the motor...this gear has to be bored out to the extent that it has little strength left, and we cracked a few of them, which results in no drive to that side of the robot. |
