2 Speed Trannies

No, not cross-dressing hookers, we're looking for transMISSIONS. Does anyone know about some tpe of 2-speed manual we can buy? From what we see, there aren't any out there, and we will have to build them ourselves. If anyone has a design that is EASY for a 20-person team with only about 7 people who have done this before to build, PLEASE ANSWER THIS THREAD!!!! Thanks

Re: 2 Speed Trannies

The standard choice for an off-the-shelf two-speed transmission is the AndyMark Shifter in one of its flavors. They run from $330-360, depending on the model, and quite possibly saved our butts last year on the field. Their website is www.andymark.biz.

If you're going to spend that much on transmissions, do yourself a favor and make sure you have the rest of your drivetrain set to take advantage of it. After all, a low gear isn't going to help you if you can slip your wheels with ease in high. My advice is to look at JVN's spreadsheet here and fiddle with your numbers first.

What exactly is the difference between the Gen1 and Gen2? One is anodized the other isn't?

According to the site, the Gen2 is a little bit taller to fit the large CIM. Other than that, since AndyMark isn't shipping the 28-tooth gear and capture bar for the large CIM this season, there's no real difference.

That is in the FRC manual, which you should be familiar with by now. I quote:

Quote:
<R35> COTS ITEMS that are generally available may be used on the ROBOT. The parts shall be
generally available from suppliers such that any other FIRST team, if it so desires, may also
obtain them at the same price. A specific device fabricated by a team from non-2008 Kit Of
Parts materials for their use does not have to be available to others; however, the materials
it is made from must be available to other teams.
I leave to the reader the task of finding the definition of COTS in the manual; suffice to say that AndyMark products fit that description.

Re: 2 Speed Trannies

If you're looking for something lighter and cheaper, how about a nice 3-speed shift on the fly gearbox? Here is Dr. Joe's Nothing but Dewalts white paper for taking a dewalt drill gearbox and making a few minor mods (all details and instructions included) to adapt to the CIMs. SPAM and others have used this for years and it is fabulous - I can't say enough about how sweet this is.

Re: 2 Speed Trannies

You might also want to make sure you really need two speeds for this game, (although it is about 4 months too early to really know for sure)

The students are pretty sure that single speed will do the job, as we are planning a shooter and hopefully won't have to slow down very often.

Current plan is to use the kit transmissions with the second stage removed, and about 1:3 sprocket ratio on the chain drive, with 6" wheels. We would be making the kit transmission into something like the AM Stacker, but with room for two CIMS. Should be interesting to see how it works out. Also we could have a couple sets of sprockets and change final drive ratio if needed.

We used the DeWalts our rookie year, and had problems with the gear that goes on the motor...this gear has to be bored out to the extent that it has little strength left, and we cracked a few of them, which results in no drive to that side of the robot.

Since the gen. 2 is made to fit the large CIM, it is also not symmetrical. This may not be a problem to most of the teams that use them, but if you want to modify the gearboxes then the gen. 1 may be more preferable.

I have read the entire rules section (including robot, field, and game sections) of the Bible over 3 times. I am VERY familiar with it. That is part of a team captain's job. but I was not sure about the legality of these SPECIFIC parts. I had heard rumors (from other 1699 teammates that are constantly on Chief Delphi) that many two-speed trannies were illegal in '08, including some AM shifters. I have now done the research and found out that this information was ill-contrived. Thank you for your help
