Motion tracking questions

I am considering the CMU2Cam for my senior design project, which is a motion tracking camera/turret. How accurate is the motion tracking (through frame differencing) feature? Can the pan and tilt option be used with motion tracking? Can it initialize a background outside, even if branches are slightly moving? Can I use IR LEDs for use at night? I tried to email the CMU people but no reply yet. I read the manual provided online, but it mainly addresses color tracking. Any input would be appreciated. $200+ is alot to shell out for a student, just find it won't work for my application.
