Catapult

Are there any rules that would make a ball launching robot not pass through inspection?

<S01> is the only rule (other than pressure). If it isn't safe, it won't pass inspection.

No way a catapult can be done

Edit: Shows what Freshmen know. Personally I think that a good team could pull it off. I'd love to watch it if they could.

I can think of a couple of ways it can be done that are well within the capabilities of first teams.

Re: Catapult

we'll put this out for review by all the kind, knowledgeable folks here on CD....will it work?

There are two identical catapults mounted next to each other, with a bar connecting them to keep them parallel. Each one has a 10" stroke 2" bore Bimba cylinder, which in the resting position is extended about 3". The latch is also pneumatically actuated, but the cylinder for it is not shown. It probably has a bearing at the contact point to reduce friction.

The cylinders are filled with compressed air after the beginning of teleoperated period. The ball is handled by another mechanism which is not shown, but which supports the ball on the catapult so that it can be lifted up by the catapult. The latch is released, and the air in the cylinders expands, causing them to extend the remaining 7" of their travel.

Our energy calculations and an experiment with a single, smaller cylinder seem to indicate that we can shoot the ball about 8 feet up....

what do you think?

Re: Catapult

It's hard to tell by the picture where the ball will sit. You're not forgetting about the flag pole are you? Is there a spot in the corner for it? As to can it accelerate the ball to an acceptable launch velocity? It's to late for my brain. Gut feeling, don't think so. Our team was going down this path. We've more or less scapped it . The stored energy and the velocity of the moving components in our opinion are a safety risk. Our school admin is very adverse to any risk. There is no way I would want them to see a mech operate like that.

Re: Catapult

The area above the catapult is clear, so the ball sits there. The flag holder (and some other stuff) sits on a tall support at the very back of the robot.

We understand there is the requirement to be very concerned about safety with this design, including having adequate warnings, interlocks, and pressure relief procedure. However, it might be that this design cannot be made to be safe when the ball is not in place, in which case we'll use a different design.

Re: Catapult

I'm still a little worried about our design, we really want to launch the ball some how, as of right now we have a catapult forklift combo. It seems good in theory, but tests have shown other wise

Re: Catapult

I'd say that a catapult can be done but it might not be wise. Hurling ten pound balls through the air possibely going over the top of the arena may be deemed "un-safe." In conclusion I would say you can indeed do it but it may not be wise.
