Go to Post In 2012, we built our best machine ever. Some visitors to our pit were visibly disappointed to find that our machine was a pile of extruded aluminum and urethane belting, just cleverly arranged and programmed. - OZ_341 [more]

build aggravations!

is anyone else getting angry at building their robot? i mean, it was easier building a Chevy 350 without using the manual than trying to set up our robot for a forklift!

Everyday, but then I clear my mind of that anger, because you can't learn anything if you're mad. And being that I know little to nothing about technology & such, I have to keep myself open to learning so that I can pass what I learn onto younger kids next year when I'm one of the very few seniors.

Not this year. But Last year we had the power go out TWICE in a row at both the shops where we work. We almost felt that God was trying to stop us... But nothing like that this year... so far...

Very wise post Maggie.
It is often one of those 'lessons' that many don't learn but it is an important and valued lesson. Staying focused and calm during build can only help the process and the team. The veteran team members are also serving as role models for those younger team members that enter the team. That can swing both ways - what to do and what not to do. Sounds like you are doing just fine!

Re: build aggravations!

Building robots itself is supposed to be frustrating, but fun at the same time. But i have little annoyances from time to time.

So, our drive coupler needed some tapped holes for set screws. So as a mentor from outside the area the team is in, I requested that the school's metals teacher to leave out a 10-32 tap for us. they left out a tap and die set which was awesome. except, no 10-32 tap in there. everything else, but that one. so we went to a hardware store and bought one, since i couldnt just run home and get mine before the night was over.

Also, the school has 2 mills and 2 drill pressed, but different ones are down or have "do not touch" signs with metals projects in there and it sets us behind and just annoys me a little.

other than that...not anything super bad this year. just the minor frustrations. knock on wood.

Re: build aggravations!

I was pulling some late hours on the chassis last night, and I wound up making a mistake on one of the axle mounts. I tried to fix it, but its just going to cause problems so I paid and ordered a new piece of metal to replace it. Minor setback but things need to be done right, not rigged for time.

Re: build aggravations!

Try not to get too stressed out already, it's only week 2! Save that real frustration for weeks 5 and 6...

And remember, there's always the light at the end of the tunnel - these six weeks of hard work may not make as much sense to rookie teams, but you'll get it once competition season comes around.
