Re: FIRST Injuries

lets see, I've had the usual cuts and scrapes, slipped and ran about an eigth inch of the tup of my thumb through the band saw, trimmed my nails with the belt sander, etc, but the best one was when I was using a snap punch on a small part and once again, it slipped, and I snap punched a good sized hole in the side of my thumb. hurt like no other.

Fine, we will share our "accidents" with pictures.

Actually, you may have created this thread for that reason; but that reason is not really a good one for chiefdelphi. Please, grow up a little with your phrases and attitude; people are judging your team by your actions.

Also, my post was a complete falsehood just to satirize what the thread hard turned into; I was actually injured kickboxing and required surgery. I hope your team is more mature than you are.

Re: FIRST Injuries

I remember two years ago, we had to use three soldering irons to get the solder to melt (the school's soldering irons are none too powerful) and two slipped, burning my hand in four places (they bounced off and hit my skin again).

This year, our "fearless leader" was testing one of our prototypes (which was a pure catapult) and cut himself on the chin.

No, you aren't just 'a bunch of high school kids'. The students who register in ChiefDelphi with their team number and team location, are members of FIRST and they know and understand the phrase, Gracious Professionalism, that Dr. Woodie Flowers coined. If they are new members of FIRST and ChiefDelphi, they sometimes have to learn what that phrase means.

This thread should also be in a forum other than General because it is more of a Chit Chat thread.

Re: FIRST Injuries

We downloaded autonomous code into our prototype robot and left it there. The next day, we fire the robot up so we can download more code into it. Little did we know, it would run that autonomous code automatically (we set it to call autonomous), so the robot charges at me and practically kills me and one of our coaches. I got a cut on the inside of my hand, and one on my toe (last time I wore flip-flops).

Lesson: Remember to download the default code at the end of the day.

No with both. My burns were very slight (and it's been two years) and Tim's cut was small and healed fast.

That same thing happened to me only we almost knocked over a few tables of computers but no one got hurt. You got any pictures of it though?

Jane is right.

Up front, I have had not injuries at robotics other than the unexplained nicks, metal shavings, and similar minor things.

Now, I would like to let you guys know about one set of awards that will kind of explain why we are not exactly happy about what this thread has become. These awards are the Safety Award and its associates, the Star of the Day and the safety credits. Safety is a priority here. Injuries are to be avoided wherever possible. This is why:
  • Safety glasses are required in the pits.
  • Teams are encouraged to have a Safety Captain.
  • There are people from Underwriters' Laboratories (UL), which monitors consumer safety, walking around making sure teams are safe.
  • The safety awards were created.
If this thread is any indication, you are in a contest to see who has the worst injury from robotics. This is NOT what FIRST wants! These pictures you request can be graphic enough that a moderator might remove them from you post for you.

Please show a little more maturity when you post. You will soon be adults and expected to act like it.

Re: FIRST Injuries

If you follow enough precautions, FIRST is a pretty safe environment. The closest I ever got to anything dangerous was shorting (and killing) one of our batteries whilst trying to charge it. This year we've ordered APC connections to graft on to our battery chargers. That should put an end to the danger.

I also cut myself on a twist-off cap on a bottle of sparkling cider at a 294 end-of-build celebration...

Re: FIRST Injuries

This thread is starting to take on a very familair feeling.
Sounds like teams need to tighten up their shop training a bit at least. Worst case scenario is hide the tools from the kids.
