Re: FIRST Injuries
Although I've never had any MAJOR injuries I hold last year's records for most small cuts in a small period of time...ironic because I became safety captain. In 2 weeks I filed my knuckle, drilled the side of my finger, closed the toolbox on my hand, hit my knuckle on the crank on the mill, took a rotor broach out of a drill press and hit it on my hand, pinched my palm in a joint, and cut myself on the sheet metal on the ramp...rough season :-P
As far as serious injuries someone let the rotor broach walk while lightening and got the nail on their thumb and the skin under it...that was icky, she's fine now though, nothing permanent just looked nasty and painful (which I'm sure it was) |

Re: FIRST Injuries
At Cal Games we had a team mate jump down some stairs... we thought he just sprained his knee but it turns out he tore his ACL. He's had surgery a couple of times sience then and currently is wearing a brace.

1. They took 4 hours to clean out the Wound and Bandage it up. About 15 minutes of those 4 hours were they actually doing anything. 2. It was my friend's 18th Birthday when it happened, I felt like I was ruining the entire thing since they followed me to the Hospital even though I told them to go home. And no, it doesn't affect my typing that much anymore. I have now got used to typing without my Ring Finger and Pinky on my right hand (with only occasional miss types). The Ring Finger is the side effect of when it used to hurt when I moved it. The bandage is still on it since the skin hasn't cover the wound yet... not even half. To my surprise it didn't even hurt that bad when it happened. Edit: Wait, did you mean my typing was inadequate in any way? Edit 2: Forgot to mention that last Year's robot attacked Ryan, our electrical mentor, on Saturday when Programming team forgot that for some reason everything resets to zero after a clock cycle (or some other Programmer Mumbo Jumbo) so our robot's arm grabbed the mentors arm and dragged him to the ground. |

Re: FIRST Injuries
At first typing was a little harder, but I got used to shifting my hand a little bit to compensate for the two inactive fingers. Although I do slip up a little bit every now and than.
Its kind of like going from Medium to Hard on Guitar Hero... that one extra button makes you shift your hand... hah. |

As we all know, modern media thrives on sensationalism. The purpose of the thread was to raise awareness to all of the injuries that occur in FIRST. As you can see in the span of 5 days there have been 98 posts and 2500 views, job well done by us getting the word out. WE APOLOGIZE if a few feathers were ruffled or if anyone got offended, but can't you see that awareness of safety has been generated?
So if you have stories post them but if have an injury and you happen to get a picture....we still want to see it, we're not looking for terribly graphic wounds but a few scrapes and cuts here and there are fine. |

Re: FIRST Injuries
One of the members on our team got savagely attacked by a zip tie. He still has the scar.

Re: FIRST Injuries
The funniest i've seen was last year at Palmetto Regional. We shared one side of our pit with 1618, so I was watching them fix their robot. They turn it on to test it and Billfred is lucky enough to be standing in front of their CIM driven arm. Not even my good ol physics teacher from the appalachains could produce a louder "yelp".

Re: FIRST Injuries
I learned not to reach across the table while someone else is holding a soldering iron. Burned between my fingers.
And heh, a story about another team member, our 2007 Head of Software/Electronics was soldering, and a mechie was next to her. Mechie: "Wow, I could never solder that stuff together so fast..." Head: "Well, that's why I'm Head of---OUCH!" Excellent timing. Oh, and now that I remember...our school, back in 07, used sports as a theme for their Back-to-School Dance. So obviously, 5-6 of us went in our TKO blue, resistor earrings, etc. I decided, idiotically enough, on a "zip tie ring". Had to bite the darn thing off when I realized my finger was a few shades too dark. |
