The battery is large and heavy.
Are we required to mount it right side up?

As long as it can be easily (read: quickly) removed you should be ok.

Nope - I do not believe that the battery is required
to be mounted right side up. Just make sure you can
remove it quickly!

However, I seem to remember reading somewhere in the
Competition Manual that says that the battery must be
charged right side up (I can't locate the exact place right now). But this is good practice anyway.

Nope. Any position is fine.

Heck, you don't even need to include it on your robot. Now that would be quite a trick.

FIRST of the future - no batteries. Alternative energy sources only. What a challenge that would be. :-)
