How a gyro works?

I was wondering how a gyro worked. As a programmer, I know how to get angles and rates and someone told me that it measures resistance. But how exactly does it do that? How does it know our rate of turn?

The solid state gyros from Analog Devices (like the one in the KOP) are resonator gyros. There is a section titled "Theory of Operation" in the data sheet that explains what it's measuring to determine the angular velocity.
