Drivers wanted....
Posted by Keith Liadis.
Student on team #131, C.H.A.O.S., from Central High School Central and Osram Sylvania and Fleet Bank. Posted on 2/6/2000 9:36 PM MST Here's a question... what's the game plan for choosing the drivers and coaches this year for you guys? I think the best way to go about it is to NOT have a formal 'let everyone drive a 2 minute round and see who does the best', but instead do an accumulative tryout that may span a few days. There won't be any controversy that way... because let's face it... everyone knows what can go wrong in any given two minutes... it's who does the best overall... right??? Any way... what does the first community think?? |

The Team 69 Way...
Posted by Lora Knepper.
Student on team #69, HYPER (Helping Youth Pursue Engineering & Robotics), from Quincy Public Schools and The Gillette Company. Posted on 2/7/2000 7:35 PM MST In Reply to: Drivers wanted.... posted by Keith Liadis on 2/6/2000 9:36 PM MST: As a driver for two years, (now entering my third), I agree that a one time event is not really the most productive way to go about it. My idea tryout includes a bit of practice with the base, because let's face it, even the veteran drivers are handling an unknown. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, and several other factors, it comes down to 1 do-or-die 2 minute match around an obsticle(sp) course. Then the finalists are weeded down, and a second run is done. Left with 3 drivers and 2 human players, the next week of practice comes down to who is the 'primary' crew, and who will be the alternates. We select our crew anonmously, by numbers to insure some degree of fairness, and conduct interviews just like a job. There are other factors, but I can see this post is really beginning to drag on! :-) Lora Knepper |
