can we use Ribbon Cable from an electronics store, such as Radio Shack?

It has to be 24AWG or larger (unless going into the serial ports as Eric mentioned above); if it meets that requirement, it is legal. BTW, the answer to this question and many others can be found (probably faster too) in the robot section of the manual.
