Things that are unnecessary

My friend and I often describe things as "unnecessary," and I am curious to see what kind of things all of you consider to be unnecessary. For example, we have decided that the bell that rings when you walk into fitting rooms, the expression 'you're welcome,' and the fact that only about 6 people in the world actually like their noses are all very unnecessary.

By the way, lemon ice is very necessary. Very.

Statue of Liberty? I think it is unnecessary, (think of the wiring possibilities with that much copper) but just try and tell that to a New Yorker.
Also, Yield signs. As they said on 'Corner Gas', they are like a stop sign that just couldn't make it.

Umm, the reason they are totally unnecessary is that there is absolutely no need to heat hot water. Now, water heaters on the other hand, totally necessary.

I also like "you're welcome," but find the expression "don't mention it" very unnecessary. If I said thank you , I just mentioned it, didn't I? Why tell me not to mention it?

Re: Things that are unnecessary

The expression "my bad" is unnecessary. You may be crudely admitting your guilt (when it may be obvious that you are to blame), but you still haven't apologized for what you have done.

Bluetooth headsets are unecessary. You even look weird when you're talking, seemingly, to yourself with your cell phone down at your side.

McDonald's is unecessary. Wendy's and Burgerking are better.

Re: Things that are unnecessary

Unnecessary: not necessary or essential; needless; unessential.

This thread is unnecessary...

The list goes on and on and on, pretty much only the things that all humans are required to have to life (i.e. water, shelter, food, warmth, etc.), otherwise, everything else= unnecessary

And In-N-Out trumps all three. (If you are in range of one; the main cluster is in CA, AZ, and NV.)

Re: Things that are unnecessary

"I'm sorry"
When used as an apology, this is fine. Otherwise, it is completely unnecessary. For example: "I'm sorry you've got a cold." The person most likely has nothing to do with the disease, and is not responsible - how could someone be sorry for something she didn't do?

"I hate to say it, but..."
If you hate to say it, then DON'T SAY IT. Usually, this prefaces something the speaker loves to say.

"Tasty"
Describing something as "tasty" is a complete nondescription. It has a taste. SO DOES EVERYTHING ELSE! It's not even describing that taste - is it a pleasureable taste, or a repulsive taste?

I get caught saying "I'm Sorry" way too much, especially when something has nothing to do with me or there is no need to state that I'm sorry. Sometimes I end it in a question mark.

Ellipses (...) are unnecessary but I have a habit of using them way too much... <---right there, a simple period would suffice.

Aren't we unnecessary in the grand scheme of things? Really puts things in perspective when you think about it.

Teaser threads.
If you got something to say. Say it.
If you got something to hide then keep it to yourself.
Otherwise you're just wasting bandwidth and everybody's time.

Well, the distinction between hot water heaters and water heaters completely validates that point.
