Metal Spur gear for Keyang motors

Is this modification allowed?

I was thinking of machining one because one of ours just stripped.

You're modifying a motor. Take a look at <R61>.

You have options, though.
  1. Wait for the event. Replace the motor at Spare Parts (bring the bad motor with you to do this).
  2. Ask Q&A. (low time, so who knows if you'll be able to do it in time)
  3. Get another motor.
  4. Redesign so you don't use that motor.

well, we have 2 more as this was the one from last year, and we didnt want to waste our ones from this year on practise, (we where planing on replacing it before shipping anyways), im just trying to prevent us from going through 3 or 4 motors over the 2 regional events we are attending.

Rule <R61> allows you to modify the output shaft and/or output interface of a motor "to facilitate the physical connection of the motor to the Robot and actuated part." Replacing a gear pressed on the end of the output shaft would seem to fit within this clause of the rule.

If you are still concerned about the legality of using a replacement metal spur gear on the output of the motor, ask the FIRST Q&A system for a formal answer. But meanwhile, to save yourself some time if they confirm this is OK, you might want to start making chips.

Let me clarify, i am refering to replacing the nylon plastic gear that is inside the gearbox of the motor.

Your question clarifies the reason why this is (unless Q&A says otherwise, which I doubt they will) okay... you are replacing a part of the GEARBOX that is ATTACHED to the motor.

You could, theoretically, hack off the entire worm gear mechanism and just use the motor component of the Keyang, just as you are under no obligation to use the plastic gearbox that came with the FP motors. (And, in fact, I highly recommend you don't... banebots has many excellent alternatives!)

"<R61> So that the maximum power level of every ROBOT is the same, motors used on the ROBOT shall not be modified in any way, except as follows:

The mounting brackets and/or output shaft/interface of the motors may be modified to facilitate the physical connection of the motor to the ROBOT and actuated part.

The gearboxes for the Fisher-Price and Globe motors are not considered “integral” and may be separated from the motors.

The electrical input leads on the motors may be trimmed to length as necessary.

The intent is to allow teams to modify mounting tabs and the like, not to gain a weight reduction by potentially compromising the structural integrity of any motor. The integral mechanical and electrical system of the motor is not to be modified. Note that FIRST will not provide replacements for modified parts."

As I read this rule, it lets you play with the gearboxes on those motors that have "separate" gearboxes, but not on those that have integral gearboxes such as the window motors. Although you are allowed to modify the output shaft (which is essentially a gear or a splined shaft on the window motors).

Definitely worth asking on the Q&A, but be very specific that you intend to replace the internal gear, not just the external one as Dave apparently assumed.
