Annoying team members
(!Rant Alert!)
Now that the FRC Build season is nearly complete, lets think back to some of those annoying team members that got on your last nerve. Does anyone have that one team member who is at every possible meeting and annoys you to death. Where almost everything they do is detrimental to progress and diminishes your spirit. That kid that doesn't listen to mentors, and ruins things as a result. They want to do everything, but they don't know how to do anything. They play with power tools, using up batteries and endangering everyone around them. Begging everyone to stop working on the robot just so that they can test drive it, and then crash it, knocking out vital parts of the robot that must then be repaired. They also operate the moving parts without warning, while they are being worked on. They slow down the though process by making impossible suggestions. they're Always eating, and requesting that more food be provided. They think they are always right, even when they aren't, and they are the first to tell you when your doing something wrong. When ever something does go wrong, they insist that it wasn't there fault. This could be the smallest kid there, but they still talk trash and curse people out when they get mad. Then they laugh at you when you hurt yourself, and blame you for being lazy when you have to leave early. Basically, The kid that is NOT a team player, and THE opposite of a gracious professional. I'm sure that every team has a kid like the one that i described, and if you would like to join me in this rant to let off your own steam, you are welcome. ![]() |

Re: Annoying team members
I'm not sure this forum is the appropriate place for this...But, I'm willing to let it stay, as long as it's shut down as soon as people start going too over the top.
For the record, I can think of maybe one student on the two teams I've been associated with for the last six+ years (5 student, 1 mentor, the + is for years pre-student) that would come even close to that. He is, however, a productive member. So not every team has one. In fact, I think most teams don't. If there is a student who is doing the type of thing you describe, then it may be time to show him the professional side of gracious professionalism and say, "no". If he's a safety hazard, keep him away from the areas he's doing damage in. /soapbox |

Re: Annoying team members
Agreed. A lot of this is a matter of opinion. As a person who has dealt with situations like one you describe outside of FIRST (in Boy Scouts), you have to consider all factors that could be influencing his behavior. For example, you have no idea of what the student's situation at home is. I won't go into detail, because this isn't the appropriate place, as Ed has said, but before you go off ranting on someone, please remember that you may not know or understand all the circumstances (some of which could plainly explain the situation).

Re: Annoying team members
I understand that this rant of mine is not very productive. Its actually very out of character for me to show anger in public like this, but i felt that in doing so i could relate to someone else. If any admin or member with the authority to remove this post removes it, i would understand.

Re: Annoying team members
In any group situation there are going to be people who are harder to get along with, for many reasons. Learning how to relate to them is one of the side benefits of FIRST. Making a public statement about people you don't like, even without naming names, will not lead to better relationships. Rather it will cause people on your team to think, "Was he talking about me? Does he think I'm annoying?"

Re: Annoying team members
This post is open season for trouble. I am closing it.
Keep inner team problems within your team. Seek your team leaders for assistance with team members that are issues. |
