Re: Things that are unnecessary
People referencing FIRST in the off-topic thread. I never understood that.... ^_^ lol.
PS - I think he means it's pointless to learn the names of Freshmen when you usually end up mixing them up or saying, "Hey you!" I could be wrong, though. |

Re: Things that are unnecessary
Agreed. Do they really need a name? I generally stick with the standard "hey you", until they prove themselves worth remembering. Go ahead and call it mean, but I only have so much memory and I am not going to waste it.

I've been very privileged to spend some time with a rookie team here in Austin, FRC 2468. They are a curriculum-based team comprised of 2 classes, 1st and 2nd period of the day. They are made up solely of Seniors with one Junior. Next year, the team will basically have to start from scratch except for the one returning student. They will struggle with continuity and lack of experience. Freshmen/new members are very important to a team's growth, development, and continuity. In Austin, we hope to continue to help new rookie teams start and establish themselves. Freshmen are a very important part of achieving this goal. Just another way of looking at things. ![]() Last edited by JaneYoung : 21-02-2008 at 14:54. |

Re: Things that are unnecessary
Freshmen certainly are necessary. I wished for one on our team when I was filing.

Re: Things that are unnecessary
Just because they are important, doesn't mean that their names are. Names are not important in the first place. Refer to "Romeo and Juliet",
"What's in a name? That which we call a rose, By any other word would smell as sweet;" They aren't important, and therefore unnecessary. Also, the only reason that I learn anyones name is out of respect. They are freshman. They don't have my respect until they earn it. And when they earn my respect, then they earn their name. If you need a place to go to see my teaching style, watch "Scrubs". Perry is a bit harsher then me, but we both use somewhat similar styles. Add pressure and work them hard. They might not like you right away, but many people need this pressure to learn at full speed. Not that all of team 1766 is this way. In fact, I push people harder then anyone else on my team. But all must admit, I get good results. Sorry for the ramble. |

First thing I did was run into a small group of students organizing the tool cart and I saw a new face. As usual, I said, 'hello, who are you?' After he had introduced himself and told me a little bit about joining the team - one of the other freshman who had had a very shy transition from middle school to LASA, said, 'Jane! Is there finally a student on the team whose name you don't know!?' I wasn't quite sure how to respond. I value names. We come from different perspectives. |

Re: Things that are unnecessary
Then it is best we agree to disagree and get back to the purpose of this thread. (Things that are unnecessary. One of which is this side discussion between me and you.) Agreed?

Staying awake past 3AM when I have to work at 7:45AM... I really need to start going to bed earlier.
